Signing the contract with Mr. Redmond is a big boost in my career. I have defeated Mason again, and the news was pasted all over the internet.
As usual, netizens began to compare both of us. If left to me, there was no need to compare. The difference was clear. Mason has been in the industry for a longer time, but here I was—growing and pushing him aside gradually.
As expected, the contract with Mr. Redmond opened the road for other opportunities. In just one day, I had gotten over 20 requests from various companies, both home and international, offering to work with me.
Mia is seated in front of me. She passed me a file.
"I have just gone through that. I think it would be worth our time and investment," she said in a soft voice.
I nodded, taking the file from her and placing it by my side.
We left the company later than usual.
I got home quite late. Mom and the twins had already gone to bed. It was past 10:00 p.m. at this point.
I walked to my room, stepped into my bathroom, and took a quick bath. When I stepped out, my phone beeped—a message from Marcus.
He wanted to meet. I pushed my hair back, tucking it gently behind my ears.
At last, I sent a message back to him explaining why I would not be able to come.
I tossed and turned on my bed, unable to sleep. I couldn’t help but wonder how Mason was feeling. This must have been a big slap to his face.
I stepped out of my bed and walked to the window. My hair danced in the wind. After a while, I walked back to my bed. I sat on the bed, resting my back on the frame.
It was past 11:30 p.m. at this point.
Since I could not sleep, I decided to scroll through the internet. The first news that came into my view was not one I was expecting—Mason was getting engaged. It had just been posted. I did not think he was one to flaunt his engagement on the internet.
But then, I have never truly known him.
Immediately I saw the message, I decided to unblock him. Since he was getting married, I might as well up my game.
I have not forgotten about my plan for revenge—to make him want me and dump him when he thinks he finally has me.
My hand hovered on my screen as I stared at his number, my eyes pinned on the unblock option.
If I were to unblock him, what benefit would it be?
I bit my lower lip, my mind reverting back to the time Mason announced our engagement to the public. His mother had been against our marriage from the start. She never wanted me as her daughter-in-law.
I knew it wasn’t the same with Julia. She wants Julia. She has always wanted her to be her daughter-in-law, and as it seems, she was going to get what she desperately wanted.
Julia is from a reputable family.
After unblocking Mason, I sent him a message first. If I want to get him, then I need to do what needs to be done.
I decided to go for a subtle start, a congratulatory message.
Me- “Hey Mason, congratulations on being a dad. I heard the news.”
I did not expect him to reply immediately.
It was as though he was expecting my message.
Mason- “Hey Lydia, you finally unblocked me.”
One side of my lips pulled up into a smirk.
Three dots appeared on my screen on his side, proof that he was typing. My phone beeped lightly—a message from him.
I typed at the same time as he.
His message came in first before I finished typing.
Mason- “How did you know about that?”
I scoffed.
He doesn’t need to know how I know about that. I had my ways, and I do not plan to reveal them to him. I sent my message, asking him about his engagement and congratulating him on it, too.
I didn’t need to wait long, as a reply came from him immediately.
“I’m glad you unblocked me. How did you know about my engagement?”
Immediately his message came in, I began typing, my fingers dancing fast on my screen. He was asking too many questions, and no, I would not be able to answer all his questions at once—at least not over the phone.
I stared straight ahead, an idea growing in my mind. Maybe this was a good time to meet with him. I would use this opportunity to my advantage. So I texted back:
Me-“You are asking so many questions. I can’t answer all of them over the phone.”
Mason- “I’m sorry about the questions. I am just curious. Anyone would want to know. These are secretive matters—not secretive, per se, but not everyone knows about these things that you just mentioned.”
The second message came in immediately after the first. I never knew he was such a fast texter.
I could tell from the tone of his message that he was trying so hard not to offend me. I wasn’t offended. Even if he were to actually offend me with his messages, at this point, I would just let it go—for the sake of the greater picture.
Me- “I would like to answer all your questions in person. How does that sound?”
I sent my message to him, a small smirk creeping to my lips.
From the look of things, it was clear that Mason had no idea that his mother had posted an announcement about his engagement. I already knew about Julia’s pregnancy from my mom, but that was something I would never disclose to him.
I stood and walked into my closet. Since I wasn’t able to sleep, I might as well make good use of this night.
My phone beeped before I could pick out a dress.
Mason- “I would like to speak with you now, if you don’t mind. Can we meet?” Mason asked.
He was dancing right to the music I was playing. I could not hold back my smile. My hands danced on my screen.
Me- “Yes, let’s meet then. I have no problem. I’ll send you an address. Come to the address.”
It seemed this night was going to be long.
I got to the manor first. Before meeting him, I quickly arranged it so it looked like I had been there all through the night. I could not invite Mason over to my house.
He obviously knows I don’t live here. If I were going to achieve what I had in mind with him, then inviting him home was a big risk I was not willing to take.
I brought out two bottles of wine. I opened one, pouring it into one of the glasses that sat on the table. I had brought some files with me, so while waiting for Mason, I went through them.
Mason came 30 minutes later.
Upon hearing a knock on the door, I knew he was here. I sprang to my feet and walked to the door. When I got to the door, I pulled down my dress a bit, exposing more of my cleavage. Taking in a deep breath, I opened my door.
Mason had a small smile on his face. His hand raised as he said,
“Hey.”
He sounded casual.
“Hey,” I said back and opened the door wider so he could step inside.
When he stepped inside, he looked around the room.
I motioned to one of the sofas, which he sat on.
“This place is beautiful.”
“I guess it was easy to find,” I said.
He nodded, his eyes stopping on the files. I began to gather them.
“You work into the night.”
I hummed in reply.
“I would never have guessed that there would be this side of you.”
Of course, he would not. He was used to always seeing me in the kitchen, so this Lydia, who knew what she wanted and how to get it, was still foreign to him.
I gathered the files in my hand and walked to the back of the sofa, where he was seated. I placed the files on a table.
“I would never have guessed I’d be sitting here with you tonight,” he said. As I was about to walk past him, his hand reached for mine. He circled his hold around my arm and led me to the side.
“Sit with me.”
I didn’t try to pull away.
The room was dark, except for the dim light hanging on the ceiling. Slow music resounded from the speaker, making the room have more of a romantic vibe.
“You had questions,” I said, trying to remind him of the reason he was here. It wasn’t the reason I had invited him, and a part of me knew he was well aware of that.
“Yes…” His words trailed as his eyes sized me up, stopping at my cleavage.
There—I was already having an effect on him, and the night was yet to begin.
