Hanna surprised me with a wedding invitation—apparently, she hadn't forgotten about me after all.
How thoughtful.
I thanked her, then carefully opened the gilded envelope. The embossed script announced the happy couple: Kaiden Xavier & Melina Farrell.
I studied the names for a long moment before tucking the invitation away.
A wedding gift was in order. I slid the emerald bracelet off my wrist, then reached into the back of my drawer for a small ring box.
Inside lay the matching wedding bands Kaiden had rejected—the ones I'd kept.
One ring slightly larger than the other.
Now, everything made sense.
Kaiden had never worn his because he'd always known we'd never make it to the altar.
He hadn't fought for us because he'd already seen the ending.
And there I was, clinging to a fantasy like some naive fool.
Pathetic.
The Morning of the 10th
Suitcase in hand, I headed for the door.
Kaiden was waiting in the living room, his gaze heavy on me. Just as I reached for the handle, he caught my wrist and pulled me into a crushing hug.
"Fiona," he murmured, "when you get back… let's talk. Really talk."
I said nothing.
Over his shoulder, our first-anniversary photo stared back at me—two kids convinced love could conquer anything.
But time had a way of stripping away illusions, leaving behind hollowed-out versions of who we used to be.
I pushed him away.
Kaiden, I'm not coming back.
Airport Terminal
The boarding announcement crackled overhead.
I stood, blocked Kaiden's number, and walked toward the gate without looking back.
Wedding Venue
Kaiden had been restless all day, his gut screaming that something was wrong.
He kept checking his phone, distracted even as he adjusted his suit. Then—
A jostle from a passerby sent his phone clattering to the floor. The screen shattered.
The man apologized profusely, but Kaiden barely heard him.
He wasn't upset about the phone.
It was the photo on the lockscreen—our picture, now fractured—that made his chest tighten.
Something vital was slipping through his fingers.
Suddenly, he remembered the way I'd looked that morning.
Too calm. Too final.
He stepped into a quiet corner and dialed my number.
No answer.
He tried again.
"The number you have reached is currently unavailable—"
His grip on the phone turned white-knuckled.
"Kaiden? Where are you going?" His parents intercepted him at the exit.
"I need to leave. Just for a bit."
His mother's voice softened with concern. "The ceremony starts soon. What could possibly be more important?"
He hesitated.
This wedding was about alliances, legacies—decades of planning.
But the thought of staying made his skin crawl.
"Melina's a lovely girl," his mother coaxed. "Feelings grow with time."
Kaiden almost laughed.
There would never be anyone else.
But under their expectant gazes, the words died in his throat.
Outside, the sun blazed—just like the day we'd met.
Fiona by the fountain, rainbow mist clinging to her hair.
That smile.
God, that smile.
He'd give anything to see it one more time.
