Hanna stepped out of the car, letting her husband, Ario Malfoy, enter first. Ario frowned when she didn't follow.
"Who are you waiting for?" he asked, irritation creeping into his voice.
Hanna didn't even glance at him. "A woman."
Ario's jaw tightened, but one sharp look from Hanna sent him retreating inside without another word.
She was waiting for Fiona—a girl she genuinely liked. There was something refreshingly real about her. Even Fiona's attempts to impress Hanna were transparent, and that honesty put her at ease.
Hanna knew Fiona wanted to get closer to Kaiden, and she didn't mind nudging things along. But after twenty minutes with no sign of her, Hanna checked her phone. No reply.
Just as she sighed in frustration, Ario reappeared. Reluctantly, she followed him in.
Inside, Ario got pulled into a conversation with an acquaintance, leaving Hanna to mingle with her usual circle.
"Did you hear?" one woman whispered behind a champagne flute. "Mr. Xavier has some nobody girlfriend—seven years together, and she still doesn't know who he really is. They're not even broken up. What's the play here? Keeping her as a side piece?"
Another smirked. "Hardly surprising. Men in this world do it all the time."
Hanna's smile stiffened. She hated this kind of gossip. The elite world was a cesspool, but at least Ario had stayed clean.
She was about to walk away when a name caught her ear.
Her head snapped around. "Did you just say Kaiden dumped a girl named Fiona Gannon?"
Her voice cut through the room like a knife. The entire hall went dead silent.
Ario appeared at her side, gripping her arm. "Sweetheart, why the shouting?"
Hanna shoved him off, fury boiling over. "You knew?"
Ario stayed quiet—confirmation enough.
With a scoff, she slapped him hard across the face. "You've got some nerve! I helped you two with that collaboration, and you hid this from me? Feeling guilty? Or are you just like Kaiden—keeping a mistress too?"
Ario clutched his cheek, looking utterly defeated. "That's not fair!"
Hanna wasn't listening. She stormed through the crowd, zeroing in on Kaiden.
"You disgusting bastard!" Her voice rang out, sharp as shattered glass. "You played poor, let that girl take care of you for seven years, cheated on her, married someone else behind her back, and turned her into your dirty little secret. How do you even live with yourself?"
Kaiden's face darkened—no one had ever dared speak to him like that. But then Hanna's next words froze him in place.
"Last time Fiona asked about you, I warned her not to get ideas—told her you were engaged. Turns out she was the real girlfriend all along!"
Kaiden's blood ran cold.
So that's why Fiona had been acting off.
His mind raced to that morning—the way she'd left, the strange finality in her voice. A sickening realization hit him: What if she wasn't on a business trip? What if she was gone?
No. He wouldn't accept that.
He shoved past Hanna, heading for the exit—until a security guard blocked his path, flanked by a delivery guy in a yellow jacket.
"Mr. Xavier," the guard said nervously. "This man has an invitation. Says he has something for you."
The delivery guy barely blinked, holding out a small box. "Kaiden Xavier? Fiona asked me to deliver this. Sign here."
Kaiden's stomach dropped as he took it.
The wedding venue erupted into chaos. Kaiden's parents looked ready to murder someone. But before anyone could react, he tore open the box.
Inside: a green emerald bracelet, two plain rings, and a handwritten note.
Happy wedding, Kaiden.
A deafening roar filled his ears. Pain spiked through his skull. The box slipped from his fingers, hitting the floor with a crash.
The bracelet shattered.
The rings vanished into the crowd.
