The year-long assignment flew by before I knew it.
My boss went out of her way to meet me in person. With a knowing smile, she said, "When you first joined my team, I could tell you were special. I'd hoped to bring you over for a year of experience before having you lead our U.S. branch—but you always said no. What made you change your mind this time?"
I gave a wry smile. "Everyone makes mistakes."
She understood immediately, clinking her glass against mine.
After she left, I sat alone in the upscale restaurant, watching the city lights twinkle below. My thoughts drifted back seven years...
It was my first birthday with Kaiden. We'd ridden the Ferris wheel, made wishes at the top, and admired the glowing amusement park below. When I said it looked magical, he'd raised an eyebrow. "That's magical? Want to see something better?"
Curious, I followed him to the rooftop of the city's tallest skyscraper—the entire skyline spread before us. Breathless, I asked, "Are we even allowed up here?"
"Don't worry," he said casually. "I called in a favor."
His calm demeanor made it seem perfectly normal. Only later did I realize that rooftop was reserved for the elite—a symbol of power he'd accessed effortlessly. That was Kaiden: unshakable whether praised or criticized. Back then, I mistook it for emotional maturity. Now I understand—it was the detachment of someone who'd always held power. When you have everything, you stop seeing the little things.
I took a sip of wine. For a year, I'd avoided thinking about him—or maybe just buried those thoughts. He never contacted me either. Of course not. Our worlds were too different. And Kaiden? Too smart to let emotions complicate things. Once he chose to marry, I knew he'd make a clean break.
Still, we'd loved each other deeply. Pretending it didn't hurt would be a lie. I'd once fantasized he'd show up someday, ready to leave everything behind for me.
Back in the U.S., my boss kept her promise—I led the new branch. Some colleagues resented my sudden promotion, but after two months of hard work, I earned their respect. Everyone except one person: Nicholas Truman, the boss's youngest son.
Fresh out of college with just three months at headquarters, he'd expected to run the branch. Instead, he became my secretary. On his first day, he arrived in a designer suit, perfectly groomed—only to be upstaged by me. Convinced I'd stolen his position, he made my life hell.
After I caught him slacking twice, he grudgingly behaved—though the snide remarks never stopped. As the boss's son, I didn't engage. Besides, beneath the attitude, he was sharp and capable.
Bang! Nicholas slammed files on my desk. "I've been talking myself hoarse, but this guy won't sign! Says he'll only deal with you. Are you two conspiring against me?"
Glancing at the papers, I stood. "Not my problem."
He followed me to the meeting room. At the door, I turned. "Wait outside."
"Why?" he snapped.
I opened the door. "You're not qualified to be here."
His face flushed crimson. "You—"
The door cut off his protest. Inside, sunlight streamed through windows, illuminating a familiar tall silhouette. My breath hitched—then steadied.
Hearing me enter, Kaiden turned. His gaze was intense. "Fiona," he said quietly. "It's been a while."
