After he left, I swiveled my chair around and stared out the window at the endless blue sky.
The truth was impossible to ignore any longer.
Yes, I loved Kaiden—but I was also growing tired of him.
This exhaustion hadn't come out of nowhere.
It had started one weekend when we were talking about New York's insane housing prices. Since he was skilled, I'd suggested he look for a higher-paying job.
Kaiden kept brushing me off.
Frustrated, I finally snapped, "Can't you just compromise for once? For us?"
He just looked at me with those calm, distant eyes.
"I've told you before—I'm average. I'm broke. Do you look down on me now?"
I had no answer.
Even now, thinking about that conversation made my chest tighten.
Since returning to the U.S. two months ago, I'd been buried in work, too busy to find a new place—so I'd been living out of a hotel.
Now, with some free time, I decided it was time to settle down.
I scrolled through my contacts, where I'd saved a handful of landlords' numbers, then quickly typed up a rental inquiry and blasted it out.
Almost instantly, a reply popped up.
"Fiona, you're back? Why are you renting? Didn't you already buy a place?"
It was from the landlord of the apartment Kaiden and I had shared.
I stared at the screen, stunned.
"When did I buy a house?"
"Last year, when you left the country. Your boyfriend bought it—and it's still under your name. You didn't know?"
My breath caught.
After a long pause, I thanked the landlord and called Kaiden.
He picked up immediately, but neither of us spoke.
Finally, I rubbed my temples. "The landlord just told me you bought our old place. In my name."
Kaiden's voice was quiet. "Consider it a keepsake."
I hung up without another word.
That apartment held seven years of memories.
We'd kissed by the door, burned meals in the kitchen, curled up together in bed with books, danced under the dim living room light… Every corner brought back flashes of warmth and longing, tightening like a knot in my chest.
Then I noticed a familiar box on the coffee table.
I walked over and lifted the lid.
Inside was an emerald bracelet, its gold trim slightly cracked where the stone met the metal. Beneath it lay a simple, unadorned ring.
I was still staring at it when I heard the door unlock behind me.
I didn't turn around.
A moment later, Kaiden's arms wrapped around me from behind, his voice rough as he murmured, "I kept the other one."
