Brian kept vigil at Laurel's hospital bedside through the long night. By morning, the doctor assured him she'd be fine—just shaken up. Only then did Brian remember with a jolt: he was supposed to pick me up from the banquet hall.
He fumbled for his phone. "Get a car to Bayfront General now," he barked at his assistant. "I need to reach the hotel for Angela."
An uncomfortable silence stretched before the assistant stammered, "Sir... about Ms. Rocha..."
"What about her?" Brian snapped.
"She... they found her..." The words tumbled out in a rush. "Her wrists—the doctors say she bled out. They've taken her to the morgue here at Bayfront."
Brian's world tilted. "That's bullshit!" His voice cracked. "Angela would never—" He could still smell my perfume, feel the warmth of my hand in his from hours earlier. "This is some sick joke, right? Did she put you up to this?"
"Brian?" Laurel's drowsy voice cut through his panic. "What's wrong? Did something happen to Angie?" Her face crumpled. "Oh God, this is my fault—"
He ended the call without answering. Gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, he murmured, "Stay here. I need to handle something."
Her fingers locked around his wrist like a vise. "Please don't go," she whispered, eyes glistening. "I need you."
For the first time, he pulled away. As he walked out, he didn't see the devastation on her face—but he felt the icy weight of finality settle in his own chest.
The morgue's fluorescent lights hummed overhead as the assistant drew back the sheet. Brian's breath hitched. There lay the face that had once nuzzled against his collarbone, now waxy and still.
His trembling fingers traced my lips—lips that had teased him just yesterday, now blue with death. The memory of my laughter echoed, sharp as broken glass. Guilt rose like bile in his throat.
A numbing cold spread through his veins.
"Angela didn't do this," he growled. "What really happened?"
The assistant shifted uncomfortably. "A staff member found her at dawn. She was already..." He swallowed. "The coroner confirmed exsanguination."
Brian's hands flew to the man's collar. "Bullshit!" he roared, slamming him against the wall. "There were a hundred people there! How the hell did nobody see—" His voice broke. The unanswered question hung between them like the stench of antiseptic.
