One night, when I got up to use the bathroom, I slowed my steps as I passed my in-laws' bedroom. Without thinking, I pressed my ear against the door.
Richard and Margaret were still awake.
Margaret's voice carried through the wood, laced with something I'd never heard from her before—uncertainty.
"Richard, after all these years in Guangdong, you haven't… met anyone else, have you?"
A smirk tugged at my lips. So Margaret Hill did know how to feel insecure.
Richard's response was nothing like the gentle tone he used with me. It was sharp, impatient.
"If I had, I wouldn't be here. What's gotten into you? Just go to sleep. If William wakes up, none of us will get any rest."
Even after being brushed off, Margaret didn't snap. Instead, her voice softened, turning syrupy.
Through the sliver of the door, I saw her—those bright red nails trailing down Richard's chest, her thigh sliding against his.
My stomach twisted. I'd never seen anything so shameless.
"Darling, it's been years. The kids are grown. We barely even feel like husband and wife anymore. Do you have any idea how lonely I've been? I've forgotten what it's like to be wanted."
Richard stayed turned away, ignoring her.
But Margaret didn't give up. Her leg inched higher, her fingers creeping toward his waistband—
And then I saw it. The dampness clinging to her panties.
Disgust coiled inside me, but my eyes stayed glued to the scene, my pulse hammering.
Margaret's hand slipped beneath the fabric of his boxers—
I stopped breathing.
Just as I braced for the inevitable, Richard suddenly sat up.
"Enough. Can't you just let me sleep? Must you always make everything a damn production?"
His roar sent Margaret recoiling—and nearly made me jump out of my skin.
Richard shoved the blanket aside and stormed out of bed.
Margaret, never once denied anything in her life, shrieked through tears,
"Richard Lowell, if you walk out that door tonight, don't you dare come back!"
A dark, vicious satisfaction curled in my chest.
Too caught up in my own triumph, I didn't realize Richard had reached the door—until it flew open.
I stumbled forward, losing my balance—
And crashed straight into him.
"Vivian!"
His arms locked around me before I could hit the ground.
I was small. He wasn't. The way he held me—tight, effortless—sent a jolt through me. Like he could do whatever he wanted, and I'd have no choice but to let him.
Eric had never made me feel like this.
And thanks to the sweltering summer heat, my nightgown was thin. Too thin. No bra. Nothing between us but fabric.
