His injuries still hadn't fully healed, so my husband spoke slowly, pausing every few words.
But his explanation only left me more confused.
The man had sharp, striking features—deep-set hawk-like eyes, a nose bridge so high it looked almost unnatural for an Asian, and subtle traces of cosmetic work if you looked closely enough. His lips were perfectly balanced—not too thin, not too thick—but when he wasn't smiling, the corners of his mouth naturally turned downward, giving him a permanently stern expression.
That face… I knew I'd seen it before. If I ignored the exaggerated nose, the familiarity was impossible to deny.
Slowly, the description merged with a face buried deep in my memory, dragging me back to a time I'd almost forgotten.
If I remembered correctly, his name was Victor Roland.
Eight years ago, I had just started university. That was the year I met my husband—back then, just a classmate—and Victor.
My husband was brilliant, the kind of student everyone went to for help. I was no exception. Over time, we grew close, and eventually, we became a couple.
Victor, on the other hand, was trouble. He barely attended classes, spent his nights out who-knows-where, and ran with a pack of guys in our department who acted like they owned the place. Arrogant, reckless—he flaunted it all without a care.
Two people who should have never crossed paths.
But fate had other plans.
By the end of our sophomore year, most students had already left for summer break, leaving the campus eerily quiet.
My husband and I had stayed behind to help our professor in the art studio. But then, we stumbled onto something we never should have seen.
My husband had a roommate—Benjamin Lawrence. Quiet, socially awkward, and rigidly principled. He took rules seriously, to the point where he'd become deputy head of the student disciplry committee.
Random dorm checks for curfew violations? That was his job.
And during one of those surprise inspections, Benjamin caught Victor breaking curfew—again.
Victor was a repeat offender, but this time was different. One more strike, and he'd be facing serious consequences.
Problem was, Benjamin didn't bend. No pleading, no threats, no bribes—nothing worked on him.
People warned Benjamin—why make an enemy out of someone like Victor? It wasn't worth it.
But Benjamin wouldn't back down. He filed the report, and sure enough, Victor got slapped with a formal warning.
Victor wasn't the type to let something like that slide. He wanted payback.
And as luck would have it, on the day he decided to act, my husband and I walked right into the middle of it.
