After some intense questioning, the ugly truth finally came together like pieces of a broken mirror.
Rachel Winston and her husband had signed a prenup - the kind with teeth. One clause stood out: if either spouse cheated, the guilty party would owe three million dollars. No exceptions, no matter what state law said about marital assets.
The real kicker? Rachel was the one who'd strayed.
"Waaah..."
She sobbed into my shoulder for what felt like hours before gasping out her defense. "Vivian, it wasn't my fault!"
Seriously? Not your fault? That's cheater talk 101.
I barely hid my eye roll. Typical. Blame everyone but yourself.
"There, there," I lied through my teeth, patting her back like she wasn't making me nauseous.
"Vivian, I swear on my life!" Rachel's voice cracked. "That guy who came onto me? He was a male escort my husband hired!"
My blood turned to ice.
Rachel's own husband had set her up - paid some guy to seduce her right after they'd signed that loaded prenup. This wasn't just betrayal; it was a goddamn financial hit job.
"One stupid night when I was wasted... just once! And bam - my husband 'catches' us."
Rachel shoved her phone at me, showing me the man who'd ruined her marriage. When the image loaded, my stomach dropped through the floor.
Because staring back at me was Chase Evans.
"Chase is an escort?!" My brain short-circuited.
Then the dominoes started falling. If Chase was for hire... and he was dating Vanessa...
I shoved Rachel off like she was on fire. "We need to move. Now."
"What?" She blinked through tears.
"That man is dating my sister-in-law right now," I hissed. "With our family's property relocation coming up? This isn't romance - it's a con job!"
Rachel's grief flipped to rage in a heartbeat. That three-million-dollar loss just found its new target.
We abandoned dinner like it was radioactive. The whole crew stormed back to my place where we found Chase and Vanessa cozy on the couch with takeout.
The color drained from Chase's face when we burst in. His fork hit the floor with a clatter. "R-Rachel?!"
Rachel moved like a woman possessed, nails first.
Vanessa reached for her phone, but I grabbed her wrist. "Check his messages," I panted. "Everything's in there."
We wrestled the phone from Chase. The first thread I opened turned my veins to lead.
Because coordinating with Chase to screw me over... was my own husband.
[Chase, hurry up and bag Vivian before the relocation. I didn't pay you to slack off.]
[Two months and still nothing? Make her fall for you already!]
Each text was a knife twist.
My legs buckled.
Of course he'd been "too busy" for months. Of course he'd avoided getting me pregnant. He'd been waiting to cash me out like a bad stock.
Rachel - now a seasoned betrayal expert - was already screenshotting everything. "Evidence," she snarled, thumb jabbing the screen like it was Chase's face.
Game on.
Rachel Winston gave me a confident smile and squeezed my hand. "Relax, Vivian. I've got all the evidence lined up for you. This time, you're walking away with everything."
"Oh, really?" I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
But deep down, I knew the truth—I'd already lost.
I had given my husband everything—my love, my loyalty, my whole damn heart. And in return? He wanted to throw it all away over a couple of stupid properties.
Fine. If that's how he wanted to play it, then I wasn't holding back either.
When the truth finally came out, my husband came crawling back to sign the divorce papers.
In the end, I walked away with two properties from our hometown's relocation project.
And from that day forward? I stopped believing in love. For good.
