His hands sent me tumbling onto the mattress, and suddenly all I could feel was this raw, aching need.
My eyes locked onto his, shining with hunger, my whole body buzzing with anticipation.
A soft whimper escaped my lips before I could stop it.
The way Chase Evans was looking at me—like a starving man finally within reach of a feast—told me he'd been waiting for this moment way too long.
He ripped off his shirt and came at me without a second thought.
Then—BAM BAM BAM.
The pounding at the door hit like a gunshot in the silent apartment.
We both jerked apart, hearts hammering.
This wasn't just bad timing—this was a disaster waiting to happen. An affair like ours? Getting caught would ruin everything.
I scrambled off the bed, my fingers fumbling to fix my clothes—half undone by Chase's eager hands. "Someone's here," I hissed, shoving him toward the door. "Go answer it."
His face twisted in frustration. "Who the hell shows up at this hour?"
I was just as pissed. After months of craving this, of aching for someone to fill the hollow space inside me, we'd been so close.
Maybe the universe just loved screwing with me.
By the time I smoothed my dress, Chase had yanked his clothes back on. He wrenched the door open, scowling—only to find two cheerful building staff standing there.
"Good evening, sir," one said politely. "Is Ms. Vivian Laurent home?"
Me?
The apartment was in my name. Swallowing hard, I limped into view, forcing my voice steady. "I'm here. What do you need?"
"Your HOA payment is due, Ms. Laurent," the guy said, still smiling.
"Right." I nodded and grabbed my phone from the couch—where I'd tossed it earlier in our frenzy.
But as I passed the hallway mirror, I froze.
My face was still flushed, lips swollen, hair a mess. The signs were obvious. With just Chase and me here, would they notice?
Heart thudding, I kept my eyes down, scanned the payment code, and practically herded them out.
Just as they turned to leave, one held out an envelope. "This came for you. Thought we'd save you a trip downstairs."
I blinked. A letter? Who even mailed things anymore? I didn't have pen pals.
"Thanks," I muttered, forcing a smile.
"Happy to help!" The guy beamed before finally leaving.
The second the door clicked shut, Chase's arms wrapped around me again.
But the spell was broken. Clarity crashed over me, cold and sharp. I shoved him back. "No. No. I'm your sister-in-law. What the hell are we doing?"
"Since when does that matter?" His fingers hooked under my chin, his smirk lazy. "Vivian, I want you. With your husband gone, let me take care of you."
"Are you insane?" I snapped. "You're Vanessa's boyfriend. You'd really do this to her?"
"She'll never find out," he growled, hands tightening on my hips.
And just like that, whatever heat I'd felt turned to ice.
I glared up at him. "Touch me again, and I swear to God, I'll call her myself."
