One night, a fleet of police cars descended on the Steven family's private clinic, surrounding it in a flash of red and blue lights.
By morning, the city was buzzing with scandal—Oliver Steven, Olivia's father, had been exposed for running an illegal organ trafficking ring, selling corpses, and even auctioning off babies. Olivia, acting as the middleman, was dragged away in handcuffs, her hair wild and her face pale on the evening news.
I stared at the screen, stunned into silence.
The Stevens had always been one of the city's most respected old-money families. Who would've guessed they'd been lining their pockets with blood money all this time?
The courts seized everything—their properties, their businesses, even Lucas's prized racing club.
And they weren't the only ones caught in the fallout. Politicians, A-list celebrities, high-profile tycoons—dozens of big names were implicated.
What awaited them? Likely a lifetime behind bars.
My chest tightened as I watched footage of the rescued infants.
Lily suddenly launched herself into my arms, tiny hands patting my cheeks.
"Mommy, what's wrong?"
I pulled her onto my lap, squeezing her tight. "Nothing, sweetheart. I'm just… so glad you're mine."
Nearby, Adrian fake-pouted, towering over us like a sulking giant. Before I could react, he tried to wedge himself onto my other knee.
I burst out laughing, shoving him away. "Seriously? You're six-foot-three and competing with a toddler for cuddles?"
He flopped onto the couch, whining dramatically. "You've replaced me, Evelyn. Our daughter gets all the kisses now."
Rolling my eyes, I leaned over and pecked his forehead.
Adrian lit up—only for Lily to immediately demand, "Mommy, I want two kisses!"
"Fine, fine."
"Then I want three," Adrian chimed in.
"…Okay."
"FOUR!" Lily shouted.
Just as I was about to drown in their ridiculousness, my phone rang—an unknown number.
I frowned. This was my private line. Only a handful of people had it.
After a beat, I answered.
"Evelyn. It's me."
Lucas's voice sent a chill down my spine.
"What do you want?" I snapped.
"You saw the news, right? The Stevens are finished." A pause. "I'm the one who turned them in."
My grip tightened on the phone. "And?"
