During Lily's first-grade summer break, we were just about to board our flight to Italy when my phone rang.
The caller ID showed a psychiatric hospital.
"Hello, is this Ms. Evelyn Smith?"
"Yes."
"Do you know a Mr. Lucas Summers? He won't speak to anyone—just keeps repeating your name and this number."
My stomach twisted. Silence stretched between us.
"Why is Lucas in a psychiatric hospital?"
"His condition is… severe. He insists he had a child with you in a past life. The police had no choice but to bring him here."
"I'm sorry, but I don't know him. I can't help."
Maybe the phone was on speaker, because Lucas's voice suddenly erupted—raw, desperate.
"She's lying! She's my wife!"
Scuffling noises. Then Lucas's breath hitched close to the receiver.
"Evelyn, I'm sorry. I was insecure—terrified you'd leave me. I didn't mean the things I said."
His voice cracked. "Please, come get me. I'm scared. They think I'm sick, but I'm not! I just need you—"
I didn't let him finish.
"This is your karma, Lucas."
"Kar…ma…" He laughed, hollow. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right."
A shaky inhale. "If we could start over… you'd pick me, wouldn't you? We'd stay together. Have a baby. Be happy—"
I cut him off.
"Not in a million lifetimes, Lucas."
"I wish we'd never met."
He wasn't listening. Just muttering, feverish:
"One more chance… just one more…"
A crash. The phone clattered. A nurse shrieked:
"He's jumped out the window!"
I ended the call. Adrian's hand—warm, steady—closed over mine.
He pulled me into his arms, voice soft against my hair.
"It's over, Evelyn. You've got me. You've got Lily. No one can hurt you now."
I buried my face in his shoulder, breathing in his familiar scent. Lily slept soundly against my chest.
He was right.
This time, I had everything.
And this time, Evelyn Smith chose happiness.
