I shoved him with all my might and tried to run, but his fingers tangled in my hair, yanking me backward. The ground rushed up to meet me, and my skull cracked against the dirt. A deafening ring filled my ears, drowning out the world. The only thing I could see was the soil on my mother's grave—scattered, disappearing, stolen from her.
I clawed forward, my fingernails splitting as I dragged myself through the dirt, leaving smears of blood in my wake.
Emma's voice cut through the haze, thick with tears. "Abby, how could you? Buddy was innocent! What did he ever do to you? He was just a dog!"
Her sobs turned accusatory. "If you hate me so much, take it out on me! Why hurt Buddy?"
"Buddy… I'm sorry. It should've been me. You died because of me—because I was in the way. I was wrong… so wrong."
What did my mother ever do?! She was dead, and they wouldn't even let her rest. Now they were digging her up like she meant nothing.
Rage burned through me, so fierce I wished I could tear them apart with my bare hands.
I swung blindly, my palm cracking across Emma's face. "You should all die!"
Jacob's voice was ice. "Enough, Abigail. You and your mother were the ones in the wrong, yet you still refuse to admit it! I thought you were decent—that you cared about this family. But it was all an act."
His lip curled in disgust. "Someone like you doesn't deserve to be my wife—or Lucas's mother. And your mother? She was a disgrace. She doesn't deserve to rest beside my family."
Then—his phone rang.
An unknown number. His mother's voice, frantic. "Jacob, where have you been? We haven't heard from you in days!"
"I'm busy, Mom. Drop it."
"How can I? You blocked us! Do you even know Abigail's mother died? An asthma attack—two days ago!"
Jacob went rigid. His voice wavered. "You're sure? It's not just another one of Abigail's lies?"
"I watched them cremate her, Jacob! How could you even ask that? No matter how angry you are, this—this is unforgivable!"
The phone slipped from his fingers.
His face drained of color as he stared at me, lips trembling. "…Abby."
"STOP THEM!"
I lunged for the grave, not caring about the dirt, the blood, the pain.
They'd already dug deep enough to expose the urn—my mother's face smiling up at me from the photo, gentle as ever.
Something inside me shattered. I slapped myself twice, hard, wishing I could just disappear.
"Mom… I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I couldn't protect you. Hit me, curse me—just come back!"
Jacob staggered toward me, voice breaking. "Abby, I didn't know—"
I shoved him away, hatred burning in my eyes. "Get away from me."
He reached for me, like he wanted to wipe my tears. I smacked his hand aside and struck him across the face. "Don't touch me. I'm filthy."
For a second, fury flashed in his eyes—then vanished.
Emma gasped, rushing to his defense. "Abby, I get that you're grieving, but you can't just hit people! What did Jacob do wrong? He cares about you!"
I slapped her too—twice. "If you pity him so much, you can suffer with him."
Lucas, seeing his father and Emma struck, charged at me like a wild animal, knocking me down.
This time, I didn't coddle him. I dragged him to the grave and forced him to his knees.
"Look. This is your grandmother. She's dead because of you. Kneel. And beg for her forgiveness."
Terror twisted his face as he thrashed. "Dad says you're lying! Grandma's not dead—she stole Emma's dog! You're both liars!"
Something inside me snapped. I brought my hand down hard. "You heartless little brat! Who stayed up night after night when you were sick? Who sang you to sleep when you were scared? Who lost a finger saving you?! Have you forgotten everything? You and your father—you're both monsters!"
Lucas wailed, scrambling away. "M-Mom, stop! I'm sorry!"
But I knew—he wasn't sorry. He was just afraid of the pain.
Jacob dropped to his knees, forehead pressing into the dirt. "Abby… this is my fault. My arrogance, my distrust—I did this. Lucas is just a child. Let me repent for him."
Thud. His head struck the ground. Thud. Thud. Over and over, until blood smeared the earth. He wept openly, his voice raw. "Mom… forgive me. Please… forgive me."
Emma rushed to pull him up, but Jacob shoved her away—hard.
When he looked at her, his eyes were colder than she'd ever seen.
