In Canada, Marina had already received the news that Leander was spreading information everywhere searching for her.
She also learned about the plane crash involving the flight Leander had booked for her. She couldn't bear to think—if she had actually listened to him and boarded that plane, what would have happened to her now?
How heartbroken would her parents have been?
She stirred the coffee in her cup, lost in thought, when her mother Eleanor approached with concern.
"Marina, Leander is searching for you everywhere. The news has spread internationally—he might discover your location soon."
Seeing her mother's worried expression, Marina smiled reassuringly.
"It's okay. I'm surprised we've kept it hidden this long. Even if he does find out where I am, Leander and I need a proper resolution eventually. Don't worry about me, Mom."
"How can I not worry? You're my daughter," Eleanor sat down beside her. "When you came here and told us what Leander did, it broke my heart thinking how much you suffered."
Since her return, her parents had been taking care of her with constant attention.
Warmth filled Marina's heart as she couldn't help but hug her mother.
"It's fine. That's all in the past. Leander and I will have no relationship going forward."
Her father Thomas called from downstairs:
"Marina, that Alden boy is here to see you again!"
Hearing this, Marina's eyes flashed with helplessness while Eleanor chuckled.
"Go on, don't keep him waiting."
"Fine, but seriously, who's your real child here?" Marina went downstairs and immediately spotted the person sitting on the sofa. "Why are you here so early? Wasn't our appointment for tonight?"
Gideon Alden turned around with a smile: "I came early to see you, and to visit your parents too."
Marina really didn't know what to do with him—he always found an excuse.
A few days after arriving in Canada, her parents had mentioned meeting an old childhood friend. Thomas and Eleanor's underlying message was clear—they wanted her to be happy. Marina understood, but having just left Leander, she really wasn't in the mood. She hadn't expected that if she wouldn't go to the mountain, the mountain would come to her.
Gideon had come directly to their door, bringing so many gifts they nearly filled her room.
Too embarrassed to refuse, Marina had given him her contact information, intending to politely decline his advances through messages. But as they chatted, she discovered Gideon was genuinely interesting.
He wasn't pushy, always gently and thoughtfully considering her feelings. Even when she refused him countless times, he wouldn't give up, instead becoming more polite in their conversations.
Once, when he learned Marina was craving food from back home, he actually showed up with a cookbook and ingredients to cook an entire meal for the Everlyn family.
Under such persistent kindness, Marina could no longer bring herself to refuse. She occasionally went out with him, though romance still felt far away.
She sat downstairs, and nearby, Gideon's face lit up when he saw her. His eyes crinkled with laughter as he shared amusing stories that had Thomas and Eleanor laughing heartily.
The tense atmosphere from Leander's search completely dissipated in this warm environment. Even Marina couldn't help but smile as she listened quietly.
By evening, seeing it was time, Gideon finally wrapped up the conversation.
"Thomas, Eleanor, it's about time I took Marina out for dinner. I'll bring her right back afterward," Gideon said.
"Of course, of course! Marina's been so fortunate to have you showing her around lately," Eleanor busily pulled Marina to her feet, earning her daughter's mock displeasure.
Though Marina wasn't truly upset, she made a few token protests before following Gideon outside.
On the road, since it was getting dark and hard to see clearly, Gideon held her hand as they walked, only consciously letting go once they reached the restaurant.
