When Marina received the news, she found that Leander had already left. The hospital nurses said he'd discharged himself before fully recovering and appeared to be returning home.
Marina didn't care. She'd said everything that needed to be said and done everything that needed to be done. She hadn't wronged anyone.
She left the hospital, and as soon as she returned home, she was pulled into a warm embrace.
"Why did you go to the hospital again?" Since gaining official status, Gideon had become secretly jealous.
Marina found it amusing—why did some people become more childish after starting a relationship? She hugged the aggrieved man and explained.
"I went to handle discharge procedures. Leander has left and returned home. He won't come back. You can relax now."
Only then did Gideon nod with satisfaction: "He should have left long ago. You're too soft-hearted, sending him to the hospital. You should have just let him die outside."
"I just felt that even for a stranger, I couldn't stand by and watch someone die." Marina kissed Gideon, then looked upstairs. "Where are my parents? I don't see them."
Gideon's gaze shifted away.
Marina immediately sensed something, pinching his face threateningly: "Speak up. Where are they? What did you all do behind my back?"
"Alright, alright, I'll tell you!" Gideon surrendered. "Your parents said if we keep going like this, we'll never be able to get married, so they went to my house to discuss engagement first..."
"Hey, Marina!"
Before he could finish, Marina had run out. She hadn't expected her parents to go without consulting her. What if the Alden family didn't like her very much? Besides, she couldn't have children now—with that reason alone, how could they casually discuss engagement?
Marina was anxious. Without time to notify her parents, she ran straight to the Alden house. The butler told her they were in the study. Marina went upstairs and was about to push open the door when she heard voices inside.
"Marina can't get pregnant? We know about that. It doesn't matter—as long as the two young people love each other. If they want children later, they can adopt one."
"Yes, we've known about this for years. Gideon doesn't mind either. He says having Marina is enough, and we feel the same way. What Alden bloodline—this isn't feudal times."
"But if Marina's health isn't good, she should take more supplements later. Don't we still have that ginseng at home? You should take some for Marina."
Marina slowed her steps. Before coming here, she'd thought the Alden family would be furious. After all, her damaged uterus meant she couldn't bear children. Even if Gideon didn't mind, their generation of elders would surely care about this. But she hadn't expected that throughout everything, the Aldens only cared about her health.
She slowly pushed open the door. The elders from both families turned around, and seeing her, immediately smiled.
"Marina's here! We were just discussing whether to have you and Gideon get engaged first. If you don't want to marry now, you don't have to—Gideon can wait."
"That's right, no need to rush. If you don't want to get engaged, that's fine too. Today can just be a joke between our two families."
The Alden parents smiled warmly. For some reason, Marina's eyes grew moist.
At that moment, Gideon stood behind her, gently taking her hand.
"I told you my parents really like you."
He pushed Marina forward a step.
This was her truly new life.
She held back the tears in her eyes and smiled brightly.
"No, I'm not unwilling. Gideon and I will get engaged first, then pick a good day to marry and get our certificate."
Both families were stunned for a moment, then burst with joy. Even Gideon hadn't expected Marina to agree so directly.
He spoke anxiously: "Marina, are you serious? You don't have to force yourself—I can wait for you."
"I'm not forcing myself. I just think now is perfect."
She smiled, gripping Gideon's hand tightly.
Three years into her marriage to Elliot Sinclair, Marina Everlyn finally received the phone call that would set her free.
She could finally escape the nightmare.
"One more month and your sister's back." Her mother's voice cut through the phone, cold as always. "Keep up this little performance for thirty more days, then we're done here. I'll put thirty million in your account and you can disappear—go be whoever the hell you want to be."
"Okay." Marina's voice came out flat, tired.
She hung up and stared at the huge wedding photo on the wall.
Elliot looked absolutely stunning in his black tuxedo—the kind of handsome that made women stop and stare. And there she was beside him in that insanely expensive dress, smiling like she was living her dream.
What a joke.
"Three years..." she whispered, running her finger along the frame. "Almost over."
The whole nightmare started three years ago when the Sinclair and Everlyn dynasties decided to unite their empires through marriage. The merger was front-page news, society pages went crazy—everyone calling it the wedding of the century. Her twin sister Isabelle was supposed to marry Elliot, the golden girl marrying the golden boy.
Then the night before the ceremony, Isabelle bailed. Just left a note on her pillow:
*Mom and Dad—I can't do this. I know you're going to hate me, but I need to figure out my own life first. Give me three years and I'll come back. I promise.*
Panic. Complete chaos. There was no way in hell the Everlyns would let a deal worth hundreds of millions collapse just because their precious daughter got cold feet.
That's when they remembered Marina. The forgotten twin they'd shipped off to live with distant relatives in some nowhere coastal town in California when they were just kids. She'd never been good enough for the family Christmas cards, let alone their fancy dinner parties.
But apparently, she was perfect for playing stand-in.
Overnight, Marina became "Isabelle"—married to a man who didn't even know her real name.
