Flustered, I quickly changed the subject. "Vincent, what's my diagnosis?"
After washing his hands, Vincent Lowell turned to me with a grave expression. "Evelyn, you do have vaginal agenesis. But I don't have the right equipment here at home. You'll need to come to the hospital tomorrow for proper treatment."
He softened his tone. "Don't worry—it's treatable. There's no need to panic."
"What happened earlier was just a routine exam. You have nothing to be concerned about." He straightened, his voice firm. "I'm your elder, and I know my boundaries."
The more serious he sounded, the more I wanted to bolt.
This was beyond mortifying. His words made me feel like a steamed lobster, wishing the floor would swallow me whole.
I could only nod along as he gave me a few quick instructions.
I barely remembered leaving the study. My face burned the entire way out.
That evening, when Daniel got home, I spilled everything—even admitting my earlier suspicions.
He laughed and pulled me into his arms. "Sweetheart, you're overthinking this."
"Dad's a professional. You can't let your imagination run wild like that." He grinned, teasing. "Who knows? He might even be the one delivering our baby someday."
With a playful smirk, he leaned in for a kiss.
I knew he was just trying to calm me down. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I whispered, "Having you here helps. I'll go to the hospital tomorrow."
I trusted that, even though Vincent was his stepfather, Daniel knew him well.
They'd lived together for years. If Vincent had been anything less than decent, Daniel's mother never would've married him.
Still, the memory of that exam nagged at me, a restless unease settling in my chest.
Something about it felt… off. The way the air had thickened, the way his touch lingered—had it really been just a medical check?
But then I pictured Vincent's kind, gentle face, and the words pervert or creep just didn't fit.
My thoughts twisted in conflict.
