Everyone thought he'd lost his mind—but I was the only one who understood. Since he couldn't find me, he had no choice but to make sure I saw him… even if it meant turning to the internet.
Days passed without a word from me.
The nurses tried to force a sedative on him, but Marlon shoved them aside and bolted from the hospital. He stumbled into the rain-soaked street, flashlight in hand, ignoring the cars and pedestrians as he frantically searched the gutters.
Drenched, disheveled, desperate.
"Where's the ring? Where's our ring?"
News crews swarmed the scene, broadcasting the spectacle of the once-powerful Marlon crawling through filthy water, clawing at the pavement like a madman. The world swooned over his "undying love," romanticizing his suffering while I watched, cold and unmoved.
His mother fought through the downpour, grabbing his arm. "Have you lost your damn mind? That woman is gone! What you need now is a wife—someone to give Isaias a sibling before it's too late!"
Marlon didn't even glance at her. He wrenched free, still searching.
"No. Margret wouldn't leave me."
His father's furious shouts echoed behind him, but Marlon was beyond reason. His mother's tug-of-war with him dragged on for five excruciating minutes, their black SUV crawling alongside them like a vulture. Then—lightning cracked.
The car door flew open.
Melanie, in some delicate dress, rushed into the storm, her face streaked with tears. She threw her arms around him, sobbing. "Marlon, please—stop this! You're scaring me! You still have me… you have Isaias. He needs you!"
The cameras surged forward, hungry for the drama.
Marlon's expression twisted. He shoved her away, nearly shouting, "Who told you to come here? Do you think Margret won't see this? That she won't hate me more?" His voice turned venomous. "And don't pretend you didn't tip off the press. You've been waiting for this, haven't you?"
Melanie staggered back, hand pressed to her mouth. His mother struck him—hard. "Enough! You're a grown man, not some lovesick fool! Move on!"
For a second, Marlon just stood there. Then his knees hit the pavement.
"It's gone," he whispered, rain mixing with tears. "I lost her… the one who held the umbrella for me."
I knew what he meant.
Years ago, on the night we met, he'd been standing in the rain just like this—lost, alone.
But time changes everything.
I would never be that girl again.
I made my decision.
Eight months later, my child was born—healthy, safe, and free.
