During my pregnancy, I received excellent care from an obstetrician named Kris. Having studied abroad for years, he had developed an open-minded perspective on love - for him, only genuine feelings mattered. My age, past experiences, even being a single mother meant nothing to him. He was convinced of his love.
When faced with his persistent affection, I usually just smiled. I'd outgrown the age of reckless romance. Still, having a younger man doting on me wasn't exactly unpleasant.
Kris became my daughter's godfather and took babysitting duties seriously. Meanwhile, I was pursuing my lifelong dream - applying to Harvard for graduate school.
The day I submitted my application materials, I snapped a selfie by Harvard's iconic gates. When I checked the photo, my blood ran cold - Marlon was standing right behind me in the frame.
I whirled around, my entire body trembling.
"Margret," Marlon said, stepping closer. "I finally found you. How are you?"
I nodded calmly, my heart undisturbed. "I have things to do. Excuse me." I turned to leave, preserving what little dignity remained between us.
Marlon grabbed my wrist. "Margret, I'm sorry. About Isaias. About Melanie. I've done a lot of thinking...I can't live without you."
Before he could continue, I cut in: "That ###Chapter's closed. I'm doing well now."
Just then, Kris arrived with our daughter, waving at me. He stood by my side, casually adjusting my scarf with those feline eyes full of affection. It took him a full two minutes to notice Marlon's hostile glare.
"Your friend?" Kris asked simply.
"My ex-husband."
Kris's eyes sparkled as he sized up Marlon warily before extending a polite hand. "Thank you. Without you, I'd never have met this incredible version of Margret."
Marlon seemed stunned that I'd moved on so completely. He stood frozen as I asked Kris to take our daughter to a nearby café.
Only then did Marlon recognize the resemblance. "Margret...is that our daughter?" His voice cracked as he moved toward her.
I blocked his path, eyes blazing. "Don't even think about it. I'll never let my daughter know she was conceived to save her father's bastard child."
