I slammed the phone down and blocked Marlon without a second thought.
Settling into my first-class seat, I sipped champagne and watched the clouds drift by, feeling an unexpected sense of peace. My parents had left me several properties overseas before they passed, and I intended to stay at one of them while I prepared for motherhood.
The divorce paperwork was already in my lawyer's hands.
Marlon wouldn't get a single cent of what was rightfully mine.
The only thing weighing on my mind was Jake, my ten-year-old Border Collie.
After I got pregnant, my mother-in-law had insisted on getting rid of him, claiming dogs were dangerous for expectant mothers. So, when I decided to leave Marlon, I'd asked my friend to take Jake in temporarily. My plan was to bring him overseas once I was settled.
Everything was falling into place—until the plane banked mid-flight, and my phone buzzed with a message from my friend:
[Margret, Jake's sick. He's at the pet hospital. You need to come back.]
I didn't hesitate. At the next stop, I booked the first flight home.
By midnight, I was back in the city where Marlon and I had spent the last twenty years.
My friend Katlin's house was pitch-black when I arrived. Heart pounding, I pushed open the door. "Katlin? How's Jake?"
A cigarette's ember glowed in the dark living room, the air thick with smoke.
My instincts screamed at me to run—but before I could move, the lights flicked on, and the door slammed shut behind me.
My mother-in-law stood there, blocking my escape.
Marlon stubbed out his cigarette, his face gaunt as he rose from the couch.
"Margret," he said, voice rough. "I told you—I'm not signing those papers. Do you have any idea how worried I've been?"
My mother-in-law lunged forward, clutching my stomach. "You heartless witch!" she shrieked. "If anything happens to my grandson, I'll make you pay!"
Katlin sat by the window, guilt written all over her face. "Margret, I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I thought it was just a fight. I didn't know… Marlon took my phone. I had no idea."
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stay calm. "Where's Jake? Is he okay?"
Katlin hesitated, then pulled back the curtains.
