Jayden stood by my side, but that only made Grayson angrier.
Grayson's hand struck Jayden's face with a sharp crack—so hard it sent my six-year-old son stumbling backward until he collapsed right in front of my grave.
His eyes were ice.
"Jayden," Grayson hissed, "what did I teach you? That's Chloe. Who told you you could speak to her like that?"
A bitter scoff escaped him. "Just like your mother—always so damn irritating."
Without another glance at Jayden, he turned and pulled Chloe into his arms, murmuring soothing words as she sniffled into his chest, playing the victim now that Jayden had dared to point at her.
"Chloe, I promised I'd protect you," Grayson murmured, stroking her hair. "No one gets to hurt you. No one."
His voice hardened as he glared at Jayden. "Not even my own son."
Another brutal kick sent Jayden sprawling.
"Kneel," Grayson ordered, jaw tight. "Apologize to Chloe. Now."
Chloe let out a delicate gasp, pressing a hand to her chest like the very picture of mercy. "Grayson, please—he's just a child. Don't be so hard on him." Her voice trembled. "If he doesn't like me… it must be my fault. I must have done something wrong. Jayden isn't to blame…"
The more she spoke, the darker Grayson's expression grew.
When Jayden still didn't move, Grayson's boot slammed into him again.
"Are you deaf?" he snarled. "I said apologize!"
Grayson worshipped Chloe—treasured her like she was his reason for breathing.
When she was diagnosed with kidney failure, some so-called spiritualist had the nerve to say it was karma—divine punishment for all the evil she'd done.
Grayson nearly beat the man to death on the spot.
And now? Just because my son had dared to defy that woman, he was being forced to his knees.
But Jayden was as stubborn as I'd been.
His little fists clenched, his eyes burning with unshed tears.
"No!" he shouted. "She killed my mom!"
Chloe's head snapped up, her face draining of color.
Grayson went completely still.
Slowly, he turned. "What did you just say?"
Even I froze, my breath catching in my throat.
