My legs had gone numb without me noticing, and the ache in my spine had sharpened into a relentless throb.

Sunlight finally spilled through the window. Dawn had come.
Then—the front door creaked open.

Thank God. Lucas was leaving.
I waited, barely breathing, then peeked through the door crack to make sure he was really gone. Only then did I let out the breath I'd been holding.
Today was my interview. If this went well, I could finally get out of here.
I rushed through my morning routine, swiped on some makeup in the bathroom mirror, and bolted out the door.
The interviewer nodded, smiling—until she dropped the bomb.
"Sorry, our staff housing is full. The new units won't be ready for another month."
I walked back into the apartment later, defeated, my purse now heavier with the weight of a kitchen knife tucked inside.
The living room was empty. Good.
I darted into the guest bedroom and locked the door behind me.
Grabbing the glass of water from the nightstand, I took a shaky sip before collapsing onto the bed, tossing and turning as my mind raced.
Why was I stuck like this? When would I ever escape this nightmare?
Exhaustion finally pulled me under, my thoughts dissolving into uneasy sleep.
I woke with a start, my eyes burning, my body stiff.
Something was… wrong.
The clock glowed 12:30 AM.
I crept to the door—still locked.
Pressed my ear against it. Silence.
Then why did my skin prickle with dread?
I climbed back into bed, unease twisting in my gut.
And then—I realized.
I froze.
In the suffocating darkness, another breath mingled with mine.
Lucas.
He'd been under my bed the whole time.
