My long-dried heart suddenly turned selfish. Maybe it was better to let nature run its course.
I'd actually surrendered to a fool—and lived through those two hours.
Almost without thinking, I moved closer to him, only stopping when dawn crept in.
Noah's breathing steadied, his face still boyish with sleep as he blinked at me in awe. "Auntie, you're incredible. I feel so much better now."
I studied him, a pang of helplessness twisting in my chest.
With a quiet sigh, I tried explaining things in terms he might grasp—but quickly realized it was pointless. No amount of words would make him understand.
Reaching out, I ruffled his hair. Soft as silk under my fingers. "Since you're better, go home and rest," I murmured.
But Noah didn't budge. He blinked up at me, a sly gleam in his eyes. "Auntie, I wanna stay with you!" His voice bubbled with excitement, like this was the most obvious request in the world.
With that much energy, I couldn't let him linger—or he'd drain me completely.
I dressed quickly, ready to send him back.
Margaret was slumped outside my door—she'd been there all night. At some point, she'd pressed her ear against it, listening, until exhaustion knocked her out. When I opened the door, she stumbled straight into me.
She jerked awake, flashing an awkward grin to cover her embarrassment. "Heh, just... checking why my boy hadn't come home yet." Her voice was rough with fatigue.
Noah bounded out behind me, fully dressed and beaming. "Mom! Auntie's the coolest! I really like her."
"Go home first," Margaret said gently. "I need to talk to your auntie."
Noah glanced between us before trotting off.
The second he was gone, Margaret seized my hand, her face stretching into an ingratiating smile. "Evelyn, I never thought my boy would barge in on you like that. So sorry for the trouble." Her words oozed apology, but her eyes sparkled with calculation.
I watched her act with icy detachment, barely stifling a scoff. Margaret was sharp—every move, every word carefully measured. I cut through the act. "How did Noah get a key to my place? Did you give it to him?"
Her smile stiffened. "Of course not! He must've stolen it." But the tremor in her voice gave her away.
Then she leaned in, probing. "You and Noah... did you...?" Her tone was heavy with implication, testing the waters.
I smirked, leaving it dangling. "What do you think?"
Margaret's eyes lit up. "Evelyn, you've done so much for us. Just name what you want." Her voice brimmed with expectation, nudging me to make a demand.
I shook my head. "Leave. I need rest."
