Monica Lowell welcomed the new girls and assigned them their rooms. One of them—the same girl who had backed me up earlier—lingered behind, saying she had a few questions and wanted to talk to me and Monica. She followed us to our room.
As luck would have it, Sean Winston called Monica away, leaving just the two of us alone.
"Are you Lulu?" Her voice was casual, but her expression had shifted—no trace of the wide-eyed innocence from before. Something darker flickered in her gaze.
"Yeah, that's me."
In a heartbeat, she closed the distance between us, her lips brushing my ear as she whispered, so low I barely caught it: "I'm Fiona Hill. I work with Hannah Evans' father."
Hannah’s father was a narcotics officer. Which meant Fiona was—
My breath hitched, but I forced my face to stay neutral. "Oh, relax! It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I’ve got extra pads—hang on, let me grab some for you."
Pure instinct. If Sean or Monica were listening in, watching for any cracks in our loyalty, I couldn’t afford to slip up.
Turns out, that split-second decision saved us both.
I kept the pads in the cabinet. As I pulled a few out, one slipped from my fingers and fluttered to the floor. When I crouched to pick it up, something else caught my eye—a tiny, barely noticeable device tucked against the baseboard.
A recorder.
Ice shot through my veins. If Fiona had spoken any louder, if I’d so much as gasped—we’d have ended up like that pregnant woman. Or worse.
Fiona must’ve pieced it together from my reaction. She took the pads with a relieved smile, playing along. "Thanks so much. I was panicking—didn’t know who else to ask."
I nodded, smiling back like it was nothing, and walked her out.
They’d already sent someone. Help was coming.
I could hold on a little longer.
