Powering on my phone again felt like stepping into another lifetime.
Tears blurred my vision as I scrolled through my WeChat contacts—so many familiar names, so many lives I’d left behind. My thumb hovered over my husband’s profile, his frantic messages screaming from the screen. But I couldn’t bring myself to reply.
"Sean, this is an old college friend of mine," I said, forcing my voice steady as I pointed to Hannah Evans’ picture. "She went into business and lost everything. I thought… maybe we could recruit her."
Sean Winston didn’t trust me. He never did. With a sharp motion, he yanked the phone from my hands and scrolled through my chat history with Hannah.
The messages told the story—her company collapsing, desperate pleas for a loan, my own helpless replies. I hadn’t been able to help her. Not then.
Sean tossed the phone back at me like it was trash. "Get her to the location. Fast."
I swallowed hard, forcing a smile, and started typing.
Behind me, Sean’s presence was suffocating, his eyes boring into my every move.
Then, suddenly—Hannah’s video call lit up the screen. I glanced at Sean, silently begging for permission.
After a beat, he gave a single, sharp nod.
I took a breath, smoothed my expression, and answered.
Hannah’s face was streaked with tears, her voice shaking. "Lulu, please—I need help.
The creditors are at my door. If I don’t pay them back in three days, they’ll go after my parents."
I softened my voice, playing the concerned friend. "Hannah, you know I’d help if I could. But I barely scraped by before. Now, though… I found something good. A part-time job, pays really well. If you need fast money, this could be your way out."
Sean’s approving nod sent a chill down my spine. I kept going, layering on the charm. "My aunt hooked me up—you remember her, right? Studied abroad, always knows the best opportunities. I wouldn’t tell just anyone about this."
I spun a glittering lie about easy money, watching Hannah’s desperation twist into cautious hope.
Finally, after a long pause, she whispered, "How do I start?"
Sean’s smirk told me I’d done my job.
Biting my lip, I gave her the address.
Hannah took a shaky breath. "Okay. I’ll get ready… and go for the interview."
