Sean Winston was thrilled with my performance. "Once your friend gets here, you can show her the ropes," he said with a satisfied grin.
I smiled and nodded, but deep down, I knew she wasn’t coming.
Hannah Evans and I had been college roommates—thick as thieves back then. She knew all about how I’d lost my aunt, the one person I’d been closest to, in a car crash during our sophomore year. I’d skipped a whole week of classes for the funeral.
Sure, Hannah had started her own company, and yeah, it had tanked when the market took a nosedive.
But what Sean and the others didn’t realize was that after the bankruptcy, Hannah had landed on her feet. She’d snagged a job at another firm, and thanks to her killer sales commissions, she’d already dug herself out of most of her debt. Still, whenever we caught up, she’d sometimes lay on the guilt trip, milking her sob story about her failed business just to get me to buy her boba.
I’d simply used what Sean didn’t know against him.
As for what Hannah would do next? I wasn’t entirely sure. But I trusted she’d figure out a way to pull me out of this mess.
After all, her dad was a narcotics officer.
Two more days crawled by, and a new group of girls arrived at the compound. Some wore hopeful expressions, while others looked utterly lost. Unlike me, they’d been brought here by the Myanmar military fully aware—no blackout, no confusion.
Sean Winston went to negotiate with the officials. I couldn’t understand their conversation, but the smug satisfaction on his face said it all—these women had come willingly.
Despite being new myself, I’d managed to stay in Sean’s good graces. So when he assigned Monica Lowell and me to train the girls as dealers and sell them on the "opportunity" here, I played my part.
A few of them figured out the scam fast. Before I could even react, they bolted for the door. But Sean’s men were faster. They stormed in, fists flying, until the only sounds left were choked sobs and whimpers.
Sean had them dragged away. Moments later, the noises from the next room hit me like a punch to the gut—the same room with those milky stains on the floor, the same room that haunted every girl’s nightmares.
The remaining girls went ghostly pale. A few tried to keep their composure, but their trembling hands gave them away.
Sean flashed a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "Welcome to the family. Rule number one? You don’t leave."
Monica, ever the soothing voice, added, "As long as you follow the rules, life here can be good. Isn’t that right, Lulu?"
Both pairs of eyes locked onto me. I forced a calm tone. "Sisters, out there, we broke our backs just to make some rich bastard richer. And the second they didn’t need us? Tossed aside like trash. But here? The family takes care of us. Every dollar you earn is yours."
A spark lit in a few of their eyes. One girl even shot to her feet. "I got fired for asking for my damn severance! If this place is fair, I’m staying!"
Sean’s grin widened. "Smart choice. We’ll start your training right away."
