I could feel someone watching me.
Walking back to the dorms after evening study hall, I could clearly sense hostile eyes tracking my every move.
I couldn't see who it was.
But I knew they were there.
Plus Delia kept peeking at me, checking what I was doing.
I figured she was spying for someone.
I stopped walking back alone after study hall, sticking with the crowd instead.
Tyler must have noticed something, because one day he said, "Jess, let me walk you back."
I didn't refuse.
We walked toward the dorms in silence. Tyler asked, "What college do you want to go to?"
I said, "Any of them would be fine."
As long as it was college, any college would do.
Tyler made a sound of understanding. "What about where you want to go?"
"Anywhere but here. I don't care where."
As long as I could leave this place, anywhere would work.
Tyler stopped walking. He faced me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish, finally managing, "...So, do you want to go with me..."
"No," I said without hesitation.
"You know why," I said. "So don't ask me to explain the obvious."
I wasn't going to waste time on stupid questions.
Tyler got pissed and stopped walking me back to the dorms.
And wouldn't you know it—that night was a weekend.
Weekend campus was basically empty.
The moment I left the academic building, I knew something was wrong, so I pulled out my box cutter.
Then someone clamped a hand over my mouth and nose.
The guy's hand was huge—I was nearly suffocating.
"Stay quiet," he said, dragging me toward the nearby woods.
His heavy breathing filled my ears. Soon I was thrown to the ground, his massive body pinning me down.
"So you're Jess Sterling?" The guy grabbed my face and laughed. "Pretty hot. Maya didn't lie."
I made muffled sounds.
"What're you trying to say?" He loosened his grip.
I opened my mouth but couldn't make a sound.
"What'd you say?" The guy leaned closer.
Perfect. When his face got close enough, I stabbed the box cutter forward. "GO TO HELL!"
"SHIT!" The guy reacted fast—the blade only grazed his skin.
But now he was PISSED.
"BITCH!" He slapped me hard. "I was gonna be nice to you at first, but now I see you're just a fucking slut."
He started tearing at my clothes.
I fought back with everything I had—teeth, legs, clawing and struggling non-stop.
Until the guy grunted.
Tyler tackled him from behind. "You piece of SHIT! How dare you touch her!"
I clutched my throat, coughing.
Tyler was no match for this guy—he got pinned to the ground. I grabbed a rock and smashed it into the attacker's shoulder.
"AHHH!" He screamed.
Tyler used the opening to shove him off, then grabbed my hand. "Let's go!"
I shook off his grip.
"Phone."
Tyler looked confused. "What?"
"Get your phone out and call the cops!"
"What?" Tyler hesitated. "If we call the police, you…"
I turned to stare at him.
Tyler gritted his teeth and dialed.
