That night was far from peaceful.
At the police station, the guy confessed that someone had asked him to "help out" by scaring me.
Right. Just scaring.
But I insisted it was assault. My injuries were physical evidence, Tyler was my witness.
Soon, the school and parents were all called in.
Including the instigator—Maya.
She looked pitiful. "It wasn't me. I never told anyone to hurt Jess. She's my sister—why would I want someone to hurt her?"
The guy protested, "Maya, it WAS you!"
Maya hung her head. "I know you like me, and maybe you wanted to defend me, but I never asked you to."
Vivian jumped in. "Maya and Jess are sisters. The girls had a little fight before, and Maya might have complained to her classmates. Boys this age are so impulsive, so maybe he just..."
The guy cursed, "You're lying!"
But obviously he was no match for the Walsh women, especially with my dad backing them up.
Dad said, "Officer, this has to be a misunderstanding. Maya's not that kind of kid. She's a good girl."
I let out a bitter laugh.
Tyler sat beside me. "It's gonna be okay."
I looked at him. Tyler's eyes were full of pity.
But I wasn't about to cry.
Since we were all minors, the case ended with mediation—Dad "forgave" the attacker on my behalf.
"Jess, I'm doing this for your own good. Making a big deal out of this won't help you either. A girl's reputation is important."
Yeah, a girl's reputation was important.
But I didn't know if he cared more about MY reputation or Maya's.
"Dad," I smiled. "Choose one—me or Maya."
"From the day I moved into the dorms until today, have you visited me even once? Have you asked if I needed money? Have you ever paid my boarding fees? Did you know I'm starving every single day?"
Dad looked shocked. "What are you talking about?"
"See? You don't know anything." I shrugged. "So you already made your choice a long time ago."
When I was twenty-eight, I made peace with myself.
I told myself I didn't lack anything anymore, that I should forgive my father.
So I went back to my hometown and went home.
I thought that after I'd been missing for ten years, he'd miss me, think about me. Even just a little bit would show on his face.
But there was nothing.
He and Vivian walked home from the market together, arm in arm, chatting and laughing like the most loving couple.
We passed each other on the street.
My father—he didn't recognize me.
Haha, he didn't recognize me.
How ridiculous.
So I'd stopped expecting him to do anything for me long ago.
