Morning light filtered through the curtains, painting golden stripes across my rumpled sheets. I blinked awake to the sound of muffled laughter drifting from the kitchen—bright, carefree voices that made my stomach clench. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I shuffled out to find the trio already at the breakfast table, their easy camaraderie hitting me like a punch to the gut.
"Sleeping Beauty awakes!" Jasmine trilled, waving a donut at me. "Your prince brought these—special delivery." She gestured to the box of glazed rings and a carton of soy milk, Liam's usual peace offering. But after last night, the sight of it just made my throat tighten.
Liam, meanwhile, was all smiles—leaning into Jasmine's jokes, stealing glances at her between sips of coffee. The way he lit up around her made me feel like a ghost at my own table.
I slid into the chair beside him and kicked his shin under the table. He barely flinched. "Eat fast," he muttered, not even looking at me. "We're late already." His tone was so icy, I half-expected my coffee to freeze over.
Across from us, Zachary fed Jasmine a bite of pastry, his fingers lingering near her lips. They were all soft gazes and whispered giggles, while my boyfriend treated me like a nagging roommate. The longer I watched, the clearer it became—Jasmine was the sun, and we were all just planets orbiting her.
"I took a personal day," I said flatly, tearing into a donut. "Not going in."
Zachary smirked. "Damn, Evelyn. You look like you wrestled a demon all night." His faux concern dripped with sarcasm. I stuffed my mouth full of sugar to keep from snapping back.
Twenty minutes later, the apartment door clicked shut behind them, leaving me in deafening silence. From the window, I caught the tail end of their routine: Jasmine hopping onto Liam's scooter, her fingers curled into the back of his shirt like she had every right to be there. The intimacy of it stole my breath.
I collapsed back into bed, but sleep was a lost cause. My brain kept looping last night's greatest hits—Liam's turned back, the headboard thumping against the wall, the way his laughter with Jasmine carried a note I'd never heard with me. The sheets twisted around me as I stared at the ceiling, wondering when I'd become the stranger in my own life.
