The voices on both phones were drowned in chaos—honking cars, shouting pedestrians, the relentless buzz of a crowded street. The noise made it nearly impossible to hear anything clearly, turning the conversation into a frustrating game of broken sentences.
Liam noticed I was keeping my voice low. His patience was wearing thin. "Stop whispering. You weren't this quiet last night." Without warning, his hand struck my cheek—hard. A sharp gasp tore from my lips before I could stop it.
"Evelyn? What was that?" Liam's voice sharpened with alarm. "Are you okay? Why did you scream?"
I pressed a hand to my mouth, steadying my breath. My glare at Zachary was venomous as I shoved him back, silently demanding he stop this madness. Guilt crashed over me like a wave. No matter how Liam treated me, we were still together. How could I have let things go this far?
Memories of Liam—his kindness, his warmth—flooded my mind, twisting the knife of shame deeper. He had always been good to me, and yet here I was, entertaining reckless thoughts about Zachary. I was about to destroy four lives, and it would all be my fault.
I swallowed hard, forcing my voice steady. "It's nothing. Just... a rat. A huge one under the bed. Scared the hell out of me."
Liam exhaled, relief softening his tone. "Jesus, you scared me. Just relax, okay? It's your day off."
Jasmine's call had already ended, leaving only Liam on the line. As I reached to hang up, Zachary chose that moment to strike—loud, mocking, deliberate. "Evelyn, am I the rat you're talking about?"
My blood ran cold. His smirk was pure挑衅, daring me to react. My face burned, thoughts spiraling.
I fumbled for an explanation, but Liam was already one step ahead. His voice turned to ice. "Evelyn. Who was that? Who's there with you?"
I opened my mouth, but Zachary beat me to it, his tone dripping with amusement. "Surprise, Liam. It's Zachary. Bet you didn't expect your girl to be hanging out with me, huh?"
The silence on the other end was deafening—until Liam exploded. "Evelyn, what the hell? You're cheating on me?"
"It's not like that!" I pleaded, desperation clawing at my throat. "Zachary's twisting everything—just let me explain!"
But the line went dead. The dial tone mocked me, a relentless reminder of my own stupidity. How had I let this happen? How could I have been so reckless?
I whirled on Zachary, my glare lethal. This was his fault. If he hadn't pushed, if he hadn't ruined everything—
Zachary met my fury with a cold, satisfied smirk. "Well? Happy now? You betrayed your boyfriend, and now he's done with you. Was it worth it?"
Rage blinded me. My hand cracked across his face before I could stop myself. He froze, shock flashing in his eyes. "This is your fault!" I spat, jabbing a finger at his chest. "You're a monster!"
"My fault?" He grabbed my throat, his gaze raking over me with disgust. "You pranced around in that, ordered that kind of delivery—you were begging for it. Don't act innocent now."
I clawed at his grip, but he held firm. His words were knives, carving humiliation into my skin. Fear and despair choked me as I stared into his merciless eyes.
"How... how dare you?" My voice cracked, tears burning. I never thought he'd strip me bare like this—turn me into something cheap, something guilty.
Zachary scoffed, shoving me away. "Cut the act. We're not kids. Who are you fooling?"
"I wasn't acting!" I snarled, fists clenched. "You forced me! I would never betray Liam!"
