The air turned glacial as Liam Lawrence fixed me with an arctic stare, that infuriating smirk playing on his lips. "Choice? That ship's sailed, sweetheart. You play by our rules now - unless you enjoy suffering."
Jasmine Valentine whipped out her phone one-handed while grabbing my collar with the other. The camera lens caught it all - Zachary Evans and Liam looming over me like predators, my humiliating position at their feet. "No call to Daddy? Perfect. Let's give him a front-row seat to his precious daughter's little performance."
Every muscle in my body screamed to fight, but logic warned me against it. These snakes thought they had me cornered? Think again.
I lifted my chin, meeting their gazes with steel in my eyes. "You really think this pathetic power play works on me? Newsflash - I don't bow to bullies."
Jasmine's laugh was all nails on chalkboard. "Ooh, tough talk from the girl on her knees. Tell me, does that pride taste better than three square meals?"
Liam's patience snapped. He took a threatening step forward when - BAM BAM BAM! - the door shook under urgent knocking.
All three heads swiveled toward the sound. My pulse skyrocketed. A rescue?
Jasmine's voice cracked. "Who's there?"
"Package delivery! Need a signature for COD!" came the muffled reply.
This was my shot. I sucked in air and screamed like a banshee, "HELP! THEY'RE TRYING TO MURDER ME!"
Chaos erupted. Zachary's meaty palm smothered my mouth as he hissed, "One more sound and I'll snap your neck!" I bucked like a wild horse, but his grip was iron.
Outside - silence. My stomach dropped.
Zachary snorted. "See? Nobody gives a damn anymore."
Jasmine started wavering. "Maybe...maybe we should bail?"
Zachary grabbed her by the shirtfront. "Wake up! We're past the point of no return here."
The realization hit me like a freight train - to these monsters, people were just disposable pawns.
"Roll camera!" Zachary barked.
Jasmine's hands shook as she hit record.
Liam shoved his phone in my face, my father's number glowing on screen. "Final offer. Call him, or we livestream your degradation to mommy and daddy."
Tears burned tracks down my cheeks, but I refused to break. With trembling fingers, I took the phone.
"Hello?" Dad's voice.
I shattered. "Daddy, I-"
CRASH! The door exploded inward as SWAT officers flooded the room, weapons drawn, scanning for threats.
"NYPD! We have reports of kidnapping and extortion. Everyone freeze!"
The sweetest words I'd ever heard.
The trio scrambled like cockroaches when the lights flip on - Liam diving for the bedroom, Zachary shoving Jasmine toward the window. Too late. Officers tackled them with clinical efficiency.
A kind-faced cop knelt beside me. "You hurt anywhere?"
I shook my head, still gulping air. "N-no. Thank you."
His grip was warm on my shoulder. "You're safe now. Let's get you somewhere quiet to talk, okay?"
