Gritting my teeth against the exhaustion weighing me down, I forced myself up and bolted home—only to walk into a nightmare.
There sat my wife, Lillian Laurent, divorce papers neatly laid out in front of her. And beside her? My so-called best friend, Damian Roscente, looking like the cat who got the cream.
I narrowed my eyes. "What the hell is this? Damian, why are you in my house?"
He leaned back, smug. "Lillian invited me. Once the ink dries on those papers, she's marrying me. Honestly, Ethan, how could you cheat on her? You really screwed up."
My stomach dropped. "You're the one who dragged me there! You—"
"Lillian didn't believe you'd actually do it," he cut in, shrugging. "So I had to test you. Too bad you failed."
The realization hit me like a freight train.
I'd been played.
Damian had set me up from the start.
No matter how much I begged, Lillian stayed ice-cold—gone was the warm, loving woman I married.
Defeated, I signed the papers.
I walked away with nothing. The house, the savings—all hers. And that $800,000 debt? Mine to shoulder alone.
With nowhere to go, I collapsed onto a park bench, my trust in people shattered.
Then a crimson Volvo rolled up beside me.
Sophia Valentine stepped out and sank onto the bench with a sigh. "Damian's wanted Lillian since before you two even got married. She turned him down back then. But after your factory went under and money got tight… well, he wore her down. Over the past month, as a real estate agent, she's checked into hotels with him more than a dozen times." She hesitated. "As her best friend, I couldn't say anything. But…" Her gaze locked onto mine. "I've always had feelings for you, Ethan. I wanted this divorce to happen."
I stared, speechless.
"Don't get me wrong—I didn't orchestrate this. Lillian made her choices. And Damian?" She let out a bitter laugh. "That 'obese guy' with her last night? The CEO of Grand Development Group. He's got a sick fetish for married women—especially when their husbands are watching. Damian bankrolled the whole thing. Sure, he wants Lillian, but mostly as a business pawn. After last night, he landed a massive deal—enough to save his family's failing company."
Rage burned through me. "That backstabbing bastard!"
He didn't just steal my wife—he used her as a bargaining chip.
What kind of soulless monster does that?
The anger dissolved into something hollow.
But who was I kidding? I walked right into his trap.
Damian had dangled temptation in front of me—free women, no consequences. I should've known better.
Instead, I was too desperate for clients to see the setup.
Sophia gave me a sad smile. "The world's brutal, Ethan. Marriage is just two people clinging to each other until the storm hits. Lillian wanted security—no debts, just comfort and beauty. And you… couldn't give her that."
I had nothing left to say.
