Sophia was right. I knew my wife Lillian all too well—she was the kind of woman who stuck around for the highs but vanished at the first sign of trouble.
Even when my factory was collapsing, her spending never slowed down. Designer handbags, luxury lipsticks—she swiped those credit cards without a second thought, leaving me to clean up the mess.
But I couldn't let her lifestyle take a hit.
She was a princess, after all—someone who needed to be spoiled.
When I didn't respond, Sophia went on, "I got divorced. My ex was impotent and lied about it until our wedding night. He begged me to wait three years before filing because his mother was dying. When the time came, he gave me half a million as compensation."
She shrugged. "I'm not some wild party girl, but a marriage without sex? I couldn't do it. He was a decent guy—just not the right one for me."
Sophia, not promiscuous?
I almost laughed. Without thinking, I said, "I heard you're the top salesperson at your company."
Instead of getting mad, Sophia locked eyes with me, deadly serious. "Oh, that's just office gossip. Let me swear to you right now—every property I've ever sold, I closed with my own skills and connections. I never slept with a client. If I'm lying, may my entire family drop dead."
She smirked. "They're just jealous. Ask any of them—would they dare take that oath?"
I was stunned.
The way she said it—so raw, so unflinching—it didn't sound like a lie. Had everything I'd heard about her been bullshit?
I was starting to believe her, especially after accidentally walking in on her using a toy at home.
If the rumors were true, she wouldn't have needed that.
But in the end, it didn't matter.
I wasn't marrying her. Even if she had slept her way to the top, it wasn't my business.
I was desperate, with nowhere else to go.
Sophia offered to let me crash at her place rent-free until I got back on my feet.
The deal was too good to pass up.
After a month of living together, I realized how wrong I'd been about her. She kept strict work hours, never using "client meetings" as an excuse to stay out all night.
When I asked why Lillian had done it, Sophia just laughed. "How many people want to tour properties at midnight? Clients prefer daylight to check the lighting. You know what Lillian was really doing, don't you?"
I had no comeback.
I'd been a fool.
Sophia had insane connections. I watched her work—patient, thorough, even with elderly clients who took forever to decide.
Later, I met her manager and got the real story. The rumors about her sleeping her way to success? Pure jealousy.
"Women like Sophia—gorgeous, talented, top of the leaderboard—of course they'll attract haters. People make up crap to feel better. She was one of our first agents. I trained her myself. No fancy education, just years of grinding in this industry. Every penny she's made, she earned fair and square."
The manager smirked. "And let's be real—do you think sleeping around could ever last in this business?"
Hearing that, I finally let go of my doubts.
Sophia introduced me to two of her clients. One, an older woman who adored her, trusted me enough to place a massive order.
Over the moon, I immediately fired up my factory again.
When I hit a cash crunch, Sophia slid me a card. "Half a million in there. Consider it a loan."
I grinned. "What if I can't pay you back?"
She flashed me a wicked smile. "Then you'll just have to repay me in other ways. Not a bad deal, right?"
