Chance? He calls this a chance? How absurd!
I stopped for a second, but then I walked straight out that door without looking back, stepping right into the cold snow outside.
When I got to that ratty factory Vivian sent me to, the place was dead empty. Only my parents—tied up in a dusty corner, duct tape smacked over their mouths, battered bad. Some cuts still oozed blood.
There was this huge open space between me and them, but the second they saw me, both my parents started shaking their heads like crazy.
Mom was making these awful sounds through the tape, fighting against the ropes, tears pouring down her face. She was trying to tell me to get out of there.
Seeing them like that just proved I was right.
I knew, this was a trap.
I knew, enemies were definitely hiding around here somewhere.
And I knew, My parents were just bait to get me here.
But I couldn't wait anymore. They looked terrible. Mom's face was white as a sheet—losing way too much blood. She wasn't gonna make it much longer.
I smiled at them, trying to look calm, then quickly checked out the place and figured out how we could get out of here.
I stuck myself with the adrenaline shot from my kit, focused on where my parents were, and took off running.
Just then, without warning—
BANG!
A gunshot rang out through the quiet factory.
My wrist just blew up. Blood went everywhere.
Mom's face went even whiter with pure terror. I didn't have time to deal with the pain—just pressed my good hand over the bleeding mess.
I looked around at all the empty space, knowing there were killers hiding everywhere, just waiting to take us down.
I kept going, running toward my parents.
Five hundred feet, three hundred, two hundred, one hundred...
Almost there!
BANG!
Another gunshot.
My right leg just gave out.
I crashed to the ground hard, but I didn't have time to waste.
I forced myself up and kept running toward my parents, dragging my bleeding leg behind me.
Even though I knew deep down that saving them was pretty much impossible.
Even though the pain from my wrist and leg was making me feel like I was gonna pass out.
But I had to get them out.
I had to.
The bastards weren't gonna give me any chance though. Every time I got close to hope, they crushed it.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
Arm, other leg, shoulder, back...
They weren't going for kill shots, but they chipped away any hope my parents and I had, one bullet at a time.
Through my blurry vision, I could see my parents looking at me with pure heartbreak and despair. Mom was making these awful sounds, struggling against her ropes, trying to get me to stop running toward them.
I tried to smile at them and was about to get up and keep going.
But then I saw Dad's terrified face.
Mom broke free from her ropes and ran toward me.
The second Mom wrapped her arms around me, this huge wall behind us came crashing down. We both got buried under all that concrete and junk.
I finally couldn't hold on any longer—my eyes fluttered shut, and I blacked out completely.
When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed, wrapped up in so many bandages I could barely move.
A little while later, Alexander walked into my room. He just stood there, staring at me with those cold eyes.
"I told you already—you don't show up, nothing happens to you. But you had to go anyway. Look what you did to yourself."
He let out this deep sigh.
"Casey, why couldn't you just trust me for once?"
Tears started sliding down my face. My throat felt like sandpaper, and when I spoke, even I was scared by how awful I sounded.
"I DID trust you! That's how you and that bitch Vivian got exactly what you wanted!"
