Alexander's face changed and he was about to say something, but noise from outside cut him off.
I looked toward the door and saw Dad out in the hallway, literally on his knees in front of some doctor in a white coat.
"Please, please save my wife..."
"Waah...please...please save her! She won't die—she can't die..."
Tears and snot were all over Dad's face. His wounds were still bleeding, but he didn't seem to feel any pain. He just kept bowing his head over and over, begging them to save Mom.
The doctor looked plainly troubled.
"Mr. Stevens, it's a miracle your daughter survived. But your wife... there's nothing more we can do. I'm sorry for your loss."
Dad acted like he couldn't hear him. Just kept crying and bowing, like that was the only thing keeping him together.
I turned to Alexander, my voice shaking like crazy.
"What's he talking about? My mom... what happened to my mom?"
Before Alexander could answer, this fake sweet voice came from behind him.
Vivian walked in with red, puffy eyes, not really looking at me.
"Casey, I swear I didn't mean for this to happen. You know I'm new to the organization. This was my first real job. If I screwed it up, they would've kicked me out."
I couldn't control my body. Just started pounding the bed with my fists. Vivian saw how pissed I was and kept going with that innocent act.
"Casey, I really didn't want this. I already told Alexander to keep you away. I was gonna find a way to help your parents escape, but you just couldn't hold your horses. That's why you wasted Auntie's life for nothing... now look what happened to you..."
My heart started racing. I felt like rage was gonna explode right out of my chest.
"I'M GONNA KILL YOU!! VIVIAN, I'M GONNA FUCKING KILL YOU!"
Alexander pulled Vivian into his arms and looked at me with total disgust.
"What kind of girl always talks about killing people? Look at yourself lying in that hospital bed—you're disgusting!"
"Vivian already had everything set up. If you'd just listened to me and stayed home like a good girl, your parents would be totally fine! You and Vivian are both mercs—how come you're so brutal but she stays sweet and kind? You're just..."
Right then, it felt like my world went completely silent. I couldn't hear anything. Just Alexander's disgusted expression and his mouth opening and closing.
The day he confessed to me, this guy who was totally ruthless in the business world stood there like some innocent kid, his cheeks all red.
"Casey, I like you. This world's too dangerous—I wanna give you a real home. I promise I'll treat you right."
"And if you love what you do, that's fine too. When you're with me, you can be whatever you wanna be. I love you, but I'll never cage you in."
"Will you... be my girlfriend? Please?"
During those five years together, everyone else saw me as this heartless killer. But Alexander would always whisper sweet things in my ear.
"Those people totally deserved it. My Casey isn't some demon—she's the most heroic girl in the whole world."
I could still hear Alexander's voice. His face was right there in front of me.
But I knew he wasn't the same person anymore.
I shut my eyes tight and heard my own scratchy voice.
"Alexander, let's break up."
