For the next month, Alexander never showed up at the hospital again. Dad finally accepted that Mom was gone, but he never smiled anymore.
I still couldn't walk, but sometimes I could sit in a wheelchair and go downstairs to get some air.
I swear, not a single second this month went by without me dying to kill the fucking Vivian, make her pay for what she did to Mom. But I knew the time wasn't right yet.
I knew I had to wait.
But Vivian didn't wanna let me off that easy. She came to the hospital and found me sitting in the garden getting some sun.
She looked at me in my wheelchair with this smug expression, then pulled out something that looked like a little pouch from her waist. She dumped all this grayish-white powder right in front of me.
In seconds, my knees, my wheelchair—everything was covered in that flying dust.
"You know what this is? This is payback for you hogging Alexander for five years."
"But so what if you guys were together for five years? I replaced you so easily. Because Alexander just thought you were fun for a while, but he actually loves me. He was willing to let your parents die just so I could finish some stupid little job."
"Even your mom can't rest in peace after dying. She's just my good luck charm now."
I jerked my head up, my voice shaking like crazy.
"What did you just say?!"
Vivian smirked, like she was totally happy with how I reacted.
"The Blackwood Group has power everywhere. Bribing some little funeral home? Easy."
"This fortune teller said I've been having bad luck lately. Your mom died in an accident, so her spirit's still around. A charm made from her ashes can protect me from bad stuff. I told Alexander I don't believe in that crap, but he loves me so much he can't stand the thought of me being in any danger."
"But looks like the fortune teller was right. Ever since your mom died and I started wearing this charm, my luck's been amazing!"
My throat felt like someone was choking me. I couldn't make any sound, just these heavy, desperate gasps.
Alexander.
How could he!
How dare he!!
I swung my hand hard at Vivian's face. I couldn't take it anymore.
Vivian must've seen it coming because she jumped back.
I couldn't control my body and crashed to the ground from the force, looking like a total mess.
Vivian had this smug look and was about to say something nasty.
But Alexander's voice suddenly exploded.
"Casey Stevens! What the hell are you doing!"
Hearing his voice, Vivian's smugness instantly turned into this innocent victim act.
"Miss. Stevens, I just came to check on you. Why would you think I'm here to rub my relationship with Alexander in your face?"
"I know you hate me. I know you blame me for your mom's death. But I already explained—I never meant for her to die. Why can't you just forgive me?"
Alexander's face went dark. After making sure Vivian was okay, he turned and screamed at me.
"Casey Stevens, what is wrong with you! You're already messed up and you're still trying to hurt Vivian! Is violence all you know how to do!"
I just found it laughable.
I never even touched Vivian—I was the one who fell flat on my face. But Alexander didn't give a shit about me lying there like that. All he cared about was Vivian.
I ignored his yelling and stared straight at him.
"I'm asking you—where are my mom's ashes?"
Alexander looked confused.
"How would I know? Aren't ashes supposed to be buried in the cemetery? Why are you asking?"
I was about to tell him what a great actor he was when Vivian grabbed his hand.
"Alex, I don't feel good. Can you take me to get checked out?"
Alexander started to say something, his mouth moving for a while, but in the end he helped Vivian leave.
I didn't watch them go. I just stared at the powder all over my clothes.
That was my mom's ashes.
My chest suddenly felt like it was burning. The next second, I tasted blood in my throat. I saw red splattering all over the ground in front of me.
My eyes closed, and I crumpled to the ground, completely blacking out.
That night at the Blackwood mansion, Alexander was in bed with Vivian. Just when things were getting intense, someone started pounding on the door.
His mood spoiled, Alexander ran his hands through his hair, totally pissed off.
"Get away!"
But the knocking didn't stop. It got even more frantic.
Alexander yanked the door open, annoyed as hell.
"This better be important..."
His secretary's voice was shaking as he cut Alexander off.
"The hospital just called. They said... they said Miss Casey Stevens is dead."
