Just thinking about all this made Alexander's chest feel tight and painful, like he couldn't breathe.
He stared at the master bedroom bed. Casey had picked out all the bedding herself. Every corner of this house had been decorated by her.
He ripped the sheets right off the bed and went crazy, throwing all the pillows and blankets on the floor.
"I'm a piece of shit! I'm fucking scum! I should be the one who's dead—it should've been me!"
His secretary got scared seeing him lose it and tried to stop him.
"Mr. Blackwood, Mr. Blackwood, this isn't your fault... what happened to Miss. Stevens was an accident. She was always so healthy—she survived those terrible gunshot wounds! Nobody could've seen this coming."
"It had to be an accident, Mr. Blackwood!"
Alexander's body jolted and stiffened. Something flashed through his mind like lightning.
He grabbed his secretary's arm and said through gritted teeth:
"Find out! Go find out what the hell happened that day! What made Casey so upset! I want every single detail!"
While the hospital was in total chaos, I was slowly waking up in a room in another mansion, lucky to be alive.
There was a familiar figure standing by the window. With the light behind him, I couldn't see who it was, but something about his presence made me feel safe.
Hearing me move, the figure turned around.
"You're awake? I thought you were dead."
His words weren't exactly sweet, but I could clearly see his furrowed brow relax.
I finally saw his face clearly.
It was Ethan Cross, the leader of the Nightfall organization.
From Ethan, I learned what had happened over the past few days.
The day my parents got kidnapped, Ethan got word about it and rushed to that abandoned factory with his guys. He got there just in time to see me and Mom getting buried under all that concrete.
After Ethan pulled me out, he had people take me and my parents to the hospital. Then he went after the rival organization to get revenge for me.
For a whole month, he completely wiped that organization off the map. When he came to pick me up from the hospital, he found me coughing up blood and passing out in the garden.
The Blackwood Group had serious pull, so to keep me safe, he bribed the hospital doctors to fake my death and got me and Dad out of there.
After hearing all this, I couldn't help but feel relieved.
Ethan noticed and his tone got nasty.
"You really love Alexander that much? So much that a few words from him can make you cough up blood? Do you have any idea that if I hadn't gotten there when I did, you think you'd still be alive to talk to me right now? Look at how many bullet holes you've got!"
"If they hadn't been messing with you and actually aimed for vital spots, wild dogs would've eaten your corpse by now!"
"And how did you treat me? For that bastard Alexander, you actually wanted to quit the organization and marry him!"
I looked at Ethan and forced a smile.
"Thanks for saving me. Once I can walk again, I'll take Dad and leave. I'm not part of the organization anymore, so I won't bother you. I owe you big time for this—if you ever need anything, just ask. I'll do whatever I can."
Something I said must've hit a nerve because Ethan's face went dark. He said through gritted teeth:
"The highest-paid assassin in the business, Casey Stevens, owes me a favor huh? Lucky me."
After saying that, Ethan didn't look at me again. He got up and walked straight out of the room.
I had no idea why Ethan was so pissed, but I couldn't think about it anymore. The drugs kicked in and I drifted back to sleep.
While I was recovering at Ethan's place, Alexander was losing his mind at the Blackwood mansion.
He'd stopped running the company completely, leaving everything to his secretary.
Ever since he heard about my death, he'd been locked up in his house all day. Nobody knew what he was doing in there.
After a whole week, Alexander finally had his secretary bring Vivian over.
Vivian didn't think much of it—figured Alexander just missed her. She showed up all happy and excited.
"Alex, don't be so sad. You still have me. I'll always be here with you..."
Before she could finish, Alexander grabbed her chin hard, making her choke on her words.
Seeing the vicious look in Alexander's eyes, Vivian finally got scared.
"Alex, what's wrong? Don't you recognize me? It's your Vivian... don't do this, you're scaring me..."
