I had no idea about the chaos at the Blackwood house. By now, I could walk with help, and after getting the doctor's okay, I could spend short periods moving around in Ethan's garden every day.
Today while I was doing my usual walk in the garden, a familiar figure showed up at the gate.
The second Alexander saw me, he dropped to his knees.
"Casey, I'm here to take you home."
I didn't want to deal with his shit, so I turned to go inside. But Alexander kicked open the little garden gate and rushed in.
"Please, Casey, just let me talk to you for a minute."
I stopped leaving.
"Alexander, I've got nothing to say to you. I just want to kill you."
Seeing that I finally spoke, Alexander jumped on it.
"I'm not leaving. If you want this life, take it—just come home with me."
I looked up at Alexander standing in front of me.
"Go back for what? To watch you and Vivian screwing around the house again? To watch you all sweaty on top of her? Or maybe go back and help Vivian finish more of her missions?"
Alexander's shoulders tensed up. He was trying to deny it like crazy.
"Nope, I already took care of her. She'll never mess with us again. I'll be good to you from now on, I... I just..."
I laughed bitterly.
"So what? You got rid of her, so your betrayal doesn't exist anymore? The damage you both did to me and my parents just disappears? Can you bring my mom back to me?"
"If you had even a tiny bit of guilt about what you did to me and my parents, you wouldn't have come here today."
Alexander's face went white. His lips moved for a long time, but no words came out.
My big tears came crashing down.
"Alexander, you killed my mother and hurt me and my dad like this. What makes you think I'd go back with you?"
My tears dripped onto Alexander's hand. He jerked back like he'd been burned.
"No, Casey, let me explain, I..."
Before Alexander could finish, a fist slammed into his face.
"Alexander! What do you think this place is? You think you can just steal people from me!"
When Alexander saw it was Ethan who threw the punch, his face changed completely.
"It's... it's you! You're the one who took Casey!"
"I should've figured it out sooner. The only person who could've saved her back then and then snuck her away right under my nose... it had to be you..."
Ethan looked down at Alexander, his pretty eyes brimming with disdain.
"If I hadn't gotten her out of there, you'd be looking at a dead body right now. What gives you the right to question me?"
Alexander's face kept changing colors. After a while, he seemed to figure something out.
"You never treated Casey like just another merc. You like her—you've been after her this whole time, haven't you!"
Ethan stopped for a second, then his lips curved up a little.
"Guess you're not totally brain-dead."
But Alexander just kept staring at me, his eyes so hopeless they looked ready to spill over.
"Casey, I really messed up, I know that. Don't treat me like this, please—I'm begging you. For the sake of the five years we loved each other..."
He was still pleading, but I didn't want to listen anymore.
"Stop! Those five years with you were the worst five years of my life!"
"If I knew being with you would mess me up this bad, I wish I never met you!"
"Alexander, every word you say makes me wanna throw up. If saying 'sorry' fixes everything, then I'm sorry too, and now I'm gonna kill you. Fair?"
Alexander's eyes went all red. After staying quiet for a long time, he said softly:
"I'm sorry."
Those three words actually made me laugh.
"Sorry?"
"If you're really sorry, then go kill yourself. Trade your life for my mom's."
