Our conversation flowed with an eerie harmony—so smooth it sent shivers down my spine.
Remembering Julia being dragged away by those bodyguards, I had to ask: "What happened to Julia?"
"Dead."
He said it like he was commenting on the weather—casual, indifferent.
Ice flooded my veins. Every muscle in my body tensed. Julia's death had been completely hushed up—not even my parents knew.
When they called, their voices were frantic.
"Where are you? Did you meet Mr. Kramer? What about Julia? You need to tell him it was you! Beg him to spare Julia!"
"This is your fault too—you didn't stop your sister! You're just as guilty! If Mr. Kramer wants payback, don't think you're getting off easy!"
"Confess! Take the blame now, and when you come home, your father, Julia, and I will owe you big time. Do you hear me?"
I stayed silent—not because I agreed, but because Albert was standing so close I could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat and the faint warmth of his breath against my skin.
Sweat prickled at my temples. When I finally spoke, my voice shook.
"I haven't seen Mr. Kramer, and I won't confess to something I didn't do. Julia's a grown woman—she made her bed, now she can lie in it. I warned her, but she didn't listen. Whatever happens, don't pin it on me!"
My defiance only made them angrier. The phone erupted with curses.
Just as I was about to hang up, Albert smoothly took the phone from my hand.
"Finished?" His voice was terrifyingly calm. "I've sent you a little gift. Make sure you're home to receive it."
"You won't be seeing Julia again, but I'll generously provide a portrait—for Alice's sake, of course."
Before my parents could respond, police sirens wailed through the receiver.
My face went pale.
"You called the cops?" My voice trembled. "You told them to stay out of this!"
He gave a faint smile. "Who said this was about the baby? It's about you."
He hung up and turned to me.
"You saved my son without taking credit. I know you're nothing like Julia." His gaze held steady. "But like I said, I always repay both favors and grudges. I'll settle things my way."
With that, he left the room, leaving behind a single document.
It was a DNA test—my name and Julia's side by side. My stomach dropped when I reached the final line: No biological relation.
She wasn't my sister.
The phone rang again—the police. My parents had been arrested.
I raced to the station with the report in hand. My parents spat venom at me, certain I'd turned them in.
But when they read the results, their voices died in their throats.
During questioning, they confessed: I was adopted. They claimed I'd been separated from my real family so long that tracking them down would be impossible.
Suddenly, everything clicked. Their blatant favoritism toward Julia finally made sense.
I didn't say another word to them. I walked out of that station clutching the truth in my hands.
That night, as I packed my bags, Albert sent a video.
Julia, impaled on steel bars, eyes frozen wide in death—just like my own end in my past life.
He mentioned showing it to my parents. They'd lost their minds on the spot.
The cops had called in psychiatrists. Odds were, my parents would spend the rest of their days in a padded cell.
A fate worse than prison.
I didn't reply. Just kept packing, determined to disappear.
But at the airport, Albert's men blocked my path.
Albert stood at the front, looking uncharacteristically awkward.
"We need a nanny for the baby," he said. "Name your price."
From his phone, the kid's giggling voice carried through a video call:
"Dad, stop using me as an excuse! Coward! So embarrassing!"
I froze, cheeks burning. My ears turned red for no reason at all.
As I debated making a run for it, the kid piped up again:
"Alice, if you leave, I'll tell your secret!"
"Dad! Alice said you—"
Albert fumbled to end the call, flustered.
"I'll stay!" I blurted, mortified. "But this kid—he's making things up!"
Albert's lips quirked. "Then teach him some manners. Little demon won't listen to anyone else."
