Her eyes burned into me like lasers.
I panicked, clutching my stomach with a hasty "Bathroom emergency!" before bolting.
Perfect. Now I'm an accomplice to her twisted game.
When this house of cards collapses, guess who's going down with her?
The sound of Julia's sickeningly sweet laugh drifted down the hallway moments later.
"Oh please, no thanks necessary! What kind of monster would ignore a drowning child? He's only five!"
Her performance was Oscar-worthy. "Really, I just did what anyone would. No reward needed—I've actually got to run!"
When the assistant tried pressing a bank card into her hand, she made a show of rushing off—conveniently "forgetting" a business card on the counter.
I emerged from hiding near the stairwell, debating whether to disappear entirely. Then Albert's icy voice froze me in place:
"Determine if this was negligence... or attempted murder."
His tone made my blood run cold. "No police. I'll handle this myself. If someone targeted my son, they'll learn steel bars break easier than bones."
The assistant nodded like a bobblehead.
As Albert studied Julia's discarded card, I held my breath.
"And the woman?"
"Leave her for now. My son comes first. She'll get what's coming."
Only when the elevator doors closed did I finally exhale. The Kramers don't play games in this city.
Julia just signed her own death warrant.
The ashtray hit my forehead before I fully crossed the threshold. Warm blood trickled into my eyebrow as Mom's shrill voice joined the assault:
"Alice! When will you stop being such a disappointment?"
Dad's calloused hand struck my fresh wound. "Years I've slaved on Kramer job sites! This was Julia's golden opportunity—were you trying to screw it up?"
Julia's lies had arrived before me. "She told you to leave! What, wanted to steal credit for saving the boy? Or are you just that stupid?"
The mask slipped. "So you admit this was always a shakedown?"
Dad's fist reared back, but Julia sauntered in, waving him off. "Don't bother. She's deadweight."
Mom's fury instantly morphed into doting pride. "My brilliant girl! Always ten steps ahead—unlike this worthless—"
I tuned out their grotesque lovefest, pressing tissues to my head. Through the thin walls, Julia's triumphant narration continued, each lie met with adoring coos. The script never changes—only now, I know how this story really ends.
