The moment I heard about the "accidental" fall, I couldn't suppress a bitter laugh.
"Don't project your stupidity onto Mr. Kramer! 'Fell'? Seriously? You think slapping that flimsy excuse over your scheming makes it believable?"
"And the steel bar—since when does solid metal snap on cue and just happen to land on a kid? Save the lies for someone dumber. At least try not to fool yourselves."
My parents' faces twisted. They stormed into my room, fists clenched.
Then—crack—a stinging slap knocked my head sideways.
"Useless! Keep your mouth shut from now on!" Dad snarled. "Sabotage your sister's plans again, and I'll break your legs myself."
"Remember," Mom hissed, "it was an accident. Julia saved that boy out of pure kindness. The Kramers owe us. If they refuse to repay her, they're the monsters!"
I pressed a hand to my throbbing cheek, laughing hollowly. Their audacity turned my stomach. "So I'm 'useless' for working honest jobs? But if I don't scam people like Julia, I'm worthless?"
"If getting rich means selling my soul? I'd rather starve."
Dad's face purpled. He snatched the shattered ashtray and hurled it at my temple. Thud.
"Honest work? With what skills? Waiting tables for pennies? If we relied on you, your mother and I would rot in a pauper's grave!"
"Worthless and ungrateful! Look at Julia—networking with billionaires while you groveled for a receptionist job at her future company. Pathetic!"
Blood seeped into my eyebrow. The wound burned, but my chest? Numb.
"I'm your daughter, not a bargaining chip. If you hate me this much, why not stop at Julia? Why even have me?"
A flicker of panic crossed their faces.
Julia smirked, scrolling through her phone. "Don't bother. She's destined to be broke. At the hospital, she was already begging me for work. What else can a loser like her say?"
"Besides," she added, eyes gleaming, "did you see how Mr. Kramer looked at me? His wife's been dead for years. If he calls… millions won't even matter."
Mom and Dad erupted in giddy praise, calling her their "golden child." But I'd caught Albert's expression too—not interest, but icy suspicion.
Cross the Kramers? Julia wouldn't survive the fallout.
Ignoring me, they bustled around Julia with "recovery" supplements for her "heroism." Not a glance at my bleeding head.
I watched, silent. No more arguments. My goal was simple: cut these people loose before their greed got me killed.
Still, the words slipped out, sharp as glass:
"Enjoy the delusion while it lasts. You're playing with fire."
Predictably, Dad exploded. "OUT!" He ripped my page from the family registry and flung it at me. "You're dead to us!"
Mom shook her head in disgust. Julia didn't look up from her phone. "Was gonna toss you a job," she said lightly, "but since you hate me? Don't come crawling back when you're homeless."
Perfect. I scooped up the torn paper, smirking.
"One day, you'll realize who the Kramers really are."
"And when they come for you? I'll be the one laughing."
I walked out, straight to the pharmacy. The clerk paled at my bloodied face, hands shaking as she passed the gauze.
"M-miss, you need a hospital—"
