My parents didn't even let me finish. Before I could get another word out, my father lunged forward and struck me hard across the face. The slap echoed through the room, leaving my cheek burning.
"You ungrateful little brat!" he bellowed, spit flying from his mouth. "Shut your damn mouth! What kind of twisted lies are you spewing now? Who's the real schemer here?"
My mother's shrill voice cut in like a knife. "What's so wrong about your sister trying to save someone out of the goodness of her heart? Huh? And eavesdropping? Please—we didn't do anything wrong!"
Her finger jabbed toward me, her eyes blazing with accusation. "Oh, I see now—you're just jealous! You went running to Mr. Kramer with your poisonous little stories to ruin her!"
"After everything we've done for you!" my father snarled, his voice thick with disgust. "We fed you, clothed you, gave you a roof over your head—and this is how you repay us? You're nothing but a backstabbing ingrate!"
"And where have you been all this time?" my mother hissed, stepping closer. "Sneaking around, plotting against your own sister? Have you no shame? No loyalty? She's your flesh and blood!"
Their words were like gasoline on the fire inside me. Whatever lingering love I had for this family burned to ash in that moment.
I pressed a hand to my throbbing cheek and met their eyes, my voice icy.
"I left to recover. That's all. If Mr. Kramer found out the truth, it's because lies don't stay buried forever. Did you really think you could keep this charade going? You played your games—now face the consequences."
I took a step forward, my glare unwavering. "That listening device? Mr. Kramer planted it weeks ago. He's known everything from the start. The only fools here are you two—blind while Julia pulled your strings like a damn puppet master."
"And yet, here you are—still defending her." My voice cracked, but I refused to let it waver. "What about me? Am I not your daughter too? What crime did I commit by refusing to help her destroy an innocent child?"
I straightened, my chin lifting. "We may be poor, but we still have our pride. At least I can sleep at night knowing I didn't sell my soul."
The neighbors, who had been watching in stunned silence, erupted into murmurs.
"I always thought it was too convenient," one muttered. "Old Reid worked that site for years and never once brought food. Then suddenly, the day Mr. Kramer's kid gets hurt, she just happens to show up? Yeah, real believable."
"Faking a rescue after setting up the accident?" another scoffed. "And then bragging about it online? How low can you get?"
"That's the Kramers for you," a third voice chimed in. "Did she really think they wouldn't find out? And now she's throwing her own sister under the bus? No wonder Alice has been treated like dirt—she's the only one in that family with a shred of decency."
The whispers closed in like a noose around my parents. Their faces drained of color, their mouths opening and closing like fish out of water.
Then—Julia's voice, shrill with panic, cut through the noise.
"That's her!" She pointed at me, her hand shaking. "That's Julia! She's the one who delivered the food that day! Take her—she's the one Mr. Kramer wants!"
My parents' eyes locked in silent panic before they scrambled to agree.
"Yes! Yes, that's Julia!" my father blurted, desperation twisting his face. "She's our eldest! Take her!"
"She's the reason Mr. Kramer's child got hurt!" my mother added frantically. "She tricked us all!"
I stood there, stunned. They were actually sacrificing me to save her.
For a second, the world blurred. Then—I laughed. A dry, hollow sound.
"I'm Julia?" My voice dripped with bitter amusement. "Mom, Dad, the neighbors have known me since I was in diapers. You really think they can't tell us apart?"
I took a sharp breath, my chest tight. "How far will you go? What did I ever do to you? What kind of parents sell out their own child?"
Before they could answer, a sharp ring cut through the tension. The lead bodyguard checked his phone, his expression darkening.
"Master Kramer's losing patience," he snapped. "We're taking her now."
With that, the bodyguards shoved past my parents, sending them stumbling back.
"Enough games!" the lead guard barked, his face twisted in fury. "Which one of you is Julia? Lie to us again, and you'll regret it."
My parents froze, their eyes darting to Julia—who was now trembling, trying to disappear into the shadows.
