"You realize if I can't play, you'll need to find someone else?" I challenged.
He hesitated like the thought had never crossed his mind. "Honestly? I hadn't considered it. You're not just our first chair - you're the soul of our string section."
A quiet satisfaction warmed me. He understood. Technical skill alone couldn't carry our music - it needed heart.
"Let Mia Blake cover for me if necessary."
The director's shoulders visibly relaxed. "Thank God you said that. She's been... eager for this opportunity. Lennon's been pushing for her too. I was hesitant at first, but your blessing changes things."
I arched an eyebrow. Of course I'd noticed Mia's ambition.
From day one as second violin, whispers had followed her. Always in my shadow, now she saw her chance to take center stage.
But as I'd told her to her face - wanting something doesn't mean you're ready for it.
Last time I said that, she'd slapped me. The raw insecurity behind that reaction spoke volumes.
What did surprise me was Lennon openly endorsing her.
After playing the wounded victim for so long, now he showed his true colors. Any lingering sympathy I'd had for him evaporated.
I pressed a hand to the dull ache in my lower back - my constant reminder.
Lennon's messages kept coming, never once acknowledging our breakup. As if ignoring it would make it disappear.
Then Mia called, oozing that same timid apprentice voice she'd used years ago.
"Coach Claire? I'm so grateful you answered! I know how this must look, but please believe me - I just want you to focus on healing. The orchestra isn't the same without you."
Her hollow concern almost made me laugh. Almost.
