While my husband was away on business, I kept seeing Lucas.
Guilt ate at me even as I melted into his arms. But with each secret meeting, my shame faded a little more under his touch.
When my husband came home, he was as devoted as ever.
But after experiencing real passion with Lucas, his rushed two-minute attempts left me cold. Still, I played my part—smiling, praising him, being the perfect wife.
Relieved I wasn't pushing for more, he surprised me by putting several properties in my name.
I reveled in the freedom, showering him with even more empty compliments.
Lucas was never meant to be anything serious—just a reckless distraction from my hollow marriage.
Then, two months later, I found out I was pregnant.
The doctor said I was seven weeks along. My hands went numb as I gripped the test results, scrambling to remember which night this had happened.
Was it that time my husband took his medication? Or was it Lucas…?
The doctor misread my panic. "Miss, if you're considering termination, the procedure is low-risk at this stage—"
"No," I cut in. "I'm keeping it."
I clenched the papers tighter. No matter who the father was, this baby would legally be my husband's.
Walking out, I forced myself to believe it was his. If I never told, no one would ever know.
As for Lucas…
A pang of guilt shot through me, but I crushed it.
Without a baby in the picture, he'd been perfect. Now? This had to end. He had to vanish.
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't see him until I almost bumped into him.
"E-Emily..." He held out a small bouquet of pale yellow daisies—my favorite since I was a kid. "F-for you."
His face was sunburned, his shirt damp with sweat from waiting.
For a second, the hopeful look in his eyes almost broke me. Then I smacked the flowers out of his hands.
He stood frozen, arm still hanging in the air. "Y-you... don't like them?"
"Don't come here again."
His mouth dropped. "W-why?"
"Just go. I never want to see you!"
I shoved past him, ignoring the hurt on his face, and stormed toward the villa without a backward glance.
Silence. He didn't follow.
