Camille's POV
Kemp suddenly stepped forward, his eyes filled with conflicting emotions as he looked at me.
“Wendy did speak to the staff,” he admitted. “I don’t know exactly what was said, though.”
Wendy whipped around, staring at him in disbelief.
“You’re taking her side now?” she snapped.
Kemp kept his gaze steady on her. “Wendy, just cooperate with the investigation. If you’re innocent, the police will clear your name.”
Wendy let out a sharp, humorless laugh, her expression twisting. “Kemp! I’m your fiancée! Aren’t you supposed to trust me unconditionally?”
He managed a weak smile and replied, “Five years ago, you told me Camille was only with me out of gratitude and for my family’s money. I believed you. But now I realize how terribly wrong I was. I didn’t trust what I saw with my own eyes, and instead, I believed your lies.”
“I wasn’t lying!” Wendy shouted, eyes reddening. “Otherwise, why else would she sit by your side at the beach day after day? Obviously, she was just trying to repay your mom for the financial support!”
Kemp’s voice was steady now. “Camille never accepted expensive gifts from me. Not once did she take any of the money I tried to transfer to her.”
But Wendy just scoffed. “Please. Acting all self-righteous? Don’t tell me she wasn’t trying to become your wife so she could spend your family’s money openly?”
“Wendy!” Kemp raised his voice this time, along with his hand, and slapped her across the face.
With a trembling voice, he hissed, “Even now, you’re still smearing her name? Do you even realize what I’ve lost? I searched for her for five whole years! You were the one who told me she left because I didn’t give her enough money!”
Tears welled in Wendy’s eyes as she clutched her cheek. “Kemp, we’ve been together for eight years. Doesn’t that mean anything to you? How is that less than the three years you had with Camille? What’s so great about her?”
Kemp looked down and let out a bitter laugh. “You’re right. Feelings can’t always be explained.”
While the two of them argued, Truman had already finished speaking with the police.
As the officers prepared to escort Wendy away, Kemp suddenly rushed over. “What did you send Camille back then? What message did you send her?!”
Wendy stayed silent for a few seconds before flashing a cryptic smile. “Why don’t you take a guess?”
That left Kemp frozen, watching helplessly as she was placed into the police car.
Then, he turned back toward me, clearly wanting to come closer, but Truman stepped in front of him.
“Kemp,” Truman said coldly, “I’m still being polite. Don’t push it. Leave now. The investment deal is off. From this moment on, we, Smiths, will never do business with you, Stokeses, again.”
Still, Kemp ignored him completely and kept walking toward me. “Camille, can we just talk?” he pleaded. “Everything that happened was a misunderstanding. I’ve always loved you. If I really wanted to marry Wendy, why do you think I haven’t done it yet?”
However, I had no interest in hearing his excuses. At the same time, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Truman’s face darkening as he calmly adjusted his sleeves. That was his signature warning sign that he was about to snap.
“Enough!” I cut him off sharply. “I’m married, Kemp. I have a child. Don’t you think this is ridiculous?”
But Kemp suddenly became frantic. “No! It’s not too late! I haven’t gotten married yet, and you can still divo—”
Before he could finish, Truman’s fist landed hard on his face.
Blood trickled from the corner of Kemp’s mouth, but he didn’t fight back. He just glared at Truman.
“Divorce?” Truman’s voice was low and dangerous. “You want my wife to divorce me, and you say it right in front of me?”
He grabbed Kemp by the collar and pulled him close. “Tell you what, how about killing me first? If I’m dead, maybe you’ll have a shot.”
What most people didn’t know was that Truman held a tenth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Five years ago, he’d single-handedly taken down a gang of thugs to protect me. Not a single strand of my hair was harmed.
Meanwhile, Kemp had always been a polite, soft-spoken type. Clearly, he was no match for someone like Truman.
