When I saw him again, Ethan looked worn and ashamed. Meeting my fierce gaze, he instinctively flinched and avoided eye contact.
I didn’t say a word. Instead, I quietly reviewed the police reports, piece by piece, until I finally filed the lawsuit.
Just as I was about to leave the station, my phone rang—Ethan.
“If I could, I wish I had died the moment I took the dagger for you. At least I wouldn’t have to endure this suffering,” he said, voice heavy with regret.
“Samantha, I don’t know why, but every day I replay those good times we had together—like a revolving lantern in my mind. I’ve lived through them countless times, only for everything to shatter the day Grace died.”
“If I had the chance to do it all over again, I hope we wouldn’t—”
He trailed off.
His words—false and repulsive—felt like bile rising in my throat right there in the police station.
He only came clean because he’d learned Henry wasn’t his biological son.
But what if Henry had been his real child?
Then what about my Grace? Did she deserve to die?
Forgiveness was impossible. All I felt was rage so fierce I wished I could tear him apart with my own hands.
While waiting for the trial, I surrounded myself with Grace’s photos and her favorite toys.
She had become my spiritual anchor.
When Ruth kidnapped me, I could still hear Grace’s voice echoing in my mind—assuring me she was still close by, a little angel protecting me.
The night before the trial, I dreamt of her again.
She was just as sweet and lively as I remembered, smiling gently as she curled into my arms.
“Mom, I’m doing well here. I miss you so much. The time I spent with you was the happiest time of my life.”
“But I have to go now. I need to wait for you in the new world.”
“Please don’t be sad for me anymore. We’ll meet again someday. You have to let me go and live a good life. I’ll be happy when I see you happy.”
Little Grace slowly drifted away, and I dared not reach out—afraid I’d keep her from moving on to that better, brighter place.
When I woke up, my pillow was soaked with tears.
On trial day, Ethan did not deny a thing. He confessed to all his crimes.
Ruth raged like a madwoman, pointing fingers at me, screaming that I had killed her son and now wanted to do the same for her.
When I glanced at Ethan, she whispered pleadingly,
“Ethan, please help me punish her. She killed our son, and you threw her into the septic tank. Ethan, help me.”
My heart clenched, but my lawyer quickly pulled me back.
It was clear she had been the mastermind behind it all.
I showed no mercy, relentlessly pursuing justice. The evidence was laid bare, undeniable.
Both Ethan and Ruth received the sentences they deserved.
They were taken away without the chance to appeal.
The nightmare was finally over. But as I stepped out of the courtroom, the weight of emptiness hit me like a tidal wave.
Looking up at the endless sky, I suddenly remembered Grace’s words—
Mom promised to live well and be happy.
I unlocked my phone. A message popped up—the teaching program I had applied to had been approved.
Now, I would use my strength to protect more children, to help them grow up healthy and safe.
I will never forget the courage Grace gave me.
