My phone is beeping with messages, so many that it is weird. I don't have anyone else who would send me a message, and since it hasn't been an hour since I parted ways with Cassian, I am not sure if he is the one who is sending me so many messages. The other people who can access this phone are Lucien or Theo, and I doubt if any of them would be sending me this many messages.
I take out my phone and swipe on it. I open up the messaging app and realise that I have been added to a group text by Cassian, and everyone on there is so excited to know that I have been well. I don't know if they are truly happy for me or if this is just an avenue for them to gossip, but I read through the messages as I am being driven home.
'Oh my goodness! , it's so wonderful to hear from you.'
'I knew that I was getting such good news today; I saw a pig in my dreams.'
'I actually thought she had died and her family was trying to hide it from the world. I am glad that is not true.'
'You have to come to the reunion tonight because we have to see you.'
The messages are weird, and the more I read through them, the more conflicted I am. Do I have to go to the reunion? If I go and they bombard me with questions, then they would instantly know that I had lied so blatantly, and what does that do for me? No one was bringing up my marriage to Lucien, which was weird because for them to be huge gossips trying to get to the bottom of what had happened, they had to gossip about it too. Did they not know, or did they not want to talk about it?
Maybe I should test it out. I take the phone and begin to type; it's a bit difficult, but I soon get the hang of it, it feels like. 'I might need to ask my husband first,' I type and send, watching as multiple bubbles appear on the screen.
'You are married?'
'When did you get married?'
'Who did you get married to?' The questions were pouring out, and none of them seemed to be lying. I could not tell, but that was what it felt like through the phone.
Someone sent a link from an article that had been released this morning. 'I saw this, but I thought it was a lie since you've been MIA.'
The congratulations began to pour in, but no one seemed to talk about who I was married to; it was almost like they were all avoiding it. I sigh and drop my phone in my bag as we enter the mansion gates. I smile to myself as I realise that I could finally lie down after all the trouble of the day.
The car slows down at the mansion entrance, and I get out to meet Theo there. "Hi, seems you are home early today," I say as he comes to meet me.
"Yes, I am, and it's because of you."
"Me?" I ask, and my hand instinctively goes to my chest in a questioning manner, and his response is a head nod. "What did I do?"
"This," he takes out his phone and gives it to me. I stare at the screen, my eyes trailing the black lines.
"What is this?" I ask not because I can't read what was written on the screen, but because I could not bring myself to understand what it meant. "What is it?" I ask again.
"This morning we were trying our best to convince people that you were Mrs. Vexley, and then a few hours later you were spotted with Mr. Vexley's highest competitor, Cassian Wolfe."
"You are repeating yourself; wait, I just read," I sighed at him, and he stopped me from entering the house with his body. " Lucien might be furious.
"Might be?"
"I haven't gone in yet because I don't know what I am supposed to say."
"If you are too scared to go in, I guess I shouldn't either." I take a step back, ready to run away, even though I know I wouldn't be able to make it out of the gate, yet I am willing to try.
"Explain this." Theo closes the distance between us. He had concern and worry laced on his face "How did this happen?" My mind is thinking a lot of things. If Lucien was angry, then I am sure that he would send me away or maybe punish me in some way. I can't help but think of how cruel he was going to be to me.
"I met an old classmate at the hospital, and he asked for coffee, so we sat down for one," I say as the image of us both smiling at each other from the screen crosses my mind. "But that picture is a lie," I say. He looks at me and tilts his head as if he does not believe me.
"You are wearing the same clothes," he motions to my clothes, and I nod. He rubs his temple gently, and I am forced to answer.
"Yes, we met up, but I never smiled at him; he might have at me, but I did not smile at him," I say, and Theo understands what I mean. "So what is going to happen now?" I asked as I bit the inside of my cheeks as if I were trying to hurt myself. Now I am glad I said no to the reunion; if Lucien was mad because of a simple meetup, what would have happened if I had gone to the party?
"Everyone is saying a lot of things, and that is the problem," he sighs, and I shake my head. Before I can open my mouth to respond, Lucien is standing in front of us, fully kitted in workout clothes.
"Theo, you can pick up the documents from the study," he says and then begins to stretch, acting as if I were not standing there.
"Where are you off to?" Teho asked, and he smiled in response. It was not the kind that screamed smile; it had a scary vibe underlying it.
"On a run," he said. He did not even spare me a glance before he began running round the compound. “Perfect smile,” I hear the mumble from him, but before I can react, he is already on the move.
"What just happened?"
"He is angry, so he is working out to release the anger."
"Does that mean that if I speak to him in a few hours, I can explain myself?"
"I don't think he is angry at you; he is probably angry that Cassian approached you."
"I don't think he approached me intentionally; he did not seem to know I was married."
", do you think the world is all roses and butterflies?" His question offends me in a way I can't explain. I have never once thought that the world was roses and butterflies. If anything, I had experienced firsthand how brutal the world can be.
"I do not," I say, picking apart all the words as if I were on a mission.
"I am a hundred percent sure that he approached you on purpose."
"And I am a hundred percent sure he was just trying to catch up with an old friend."
