LUCIEN
I am startled awake out of bed, sitting down and trying to calm my heartbeat in my chest. I look around the pitch-dark room before my easy fall to the bedside alarm clock. I sigh as I realise it is a few minutes past 2 am. I had fallen asleep only to be awakened by this nightmare. It had been years since I had had one. I had managed to keep away all of the triggers that caused them, but now that I had to talk to about it, all of the memories I had thought I had overcome came flooding back.
So I had not been able to overcome it? I just thought that I did. I sigh and rub the sleep out of my eyes; with this, I know I won't be able to sleep again. I take up my phone and sit facing the large window that overlooks the entire house floor with one view, and I begin to try and catch up with work. I am scrolling endlessly on social media because it is impossible for me to focus on one thing now, and it is a much-needed distraction that I need.
My eyes fall on a video, and my heart rate increases. The video is from last afternoon; it shows , Theo, and Cassian. Theo is lifting Cassian and bullying him. The comments were already scary; what if this affects in any way? I close my eyes, trying to steady my breathing.
"How did this happen?" I murmur. I tap on the screen to unmute it, and the first thing I hear “…Vexley’s right-hand thug assaulting Dr. Cassian Wolfe, heir to Wolfe Industries…”
I know that Cassian knew I wouldn't be able to let him have lunch with my wife and that I would send Theo there. He was such a sneaky little bastard, staging all of this and turning me into an enemy with her.
I closed my eyes, and the memories from ten years ago flooded my mind. I had just returned from studying abroad, ready to take over my father's small investment company, when all of a sudden, everything went downhill, and I lost my family.
Enoch and Clarendon were the masterminds behind the destruction. They put a fake investment scheme and are trying to launder money in his father's name. Of course, it worked because they were meticulous and planned it behind his back. Before long, his father's image was destroyed, but they did not stop there because he had everything he needed to expose that they were a part of the entire scheme, so they sent a killer, and the killer ended his entire family, with him being the only one that survived.
My eyes shot open once again, feeling my head throb. Cassian's father, Clarendon, was the mastermind, and he let his son sit in on all of the meetings. He had access to the evidence, but he was more interested in power than in saving anyone. He heard his father and Clarendon discuss his new daughter and how he molested her, but instead of helping, he only stood by like a fool, watching it all happen while offering fakeness all in the face of .
I remember Cassian laughing at the joke Enoch made about your father 'raising you to be obedient.' He didn’t flinch and didn’t even look uncomfortable
I do not have any evidence to back it up, but I know it happened. Cassian was the one who could have shut it down from the inside, but instead, he chose to be a part of it all without thinking too much about it. They polished him off and presented him as a clean image, the perfect heir who did all good things, exposed criminals, and even went to volunteer all over, but no one knew the kind of monster they had created. He would do only worse than his father and Enoch did.
I knew that this was an opening to more nightmares. I thought I had gotten better, but all I did was suppress the hell out of it on my own. I am more worried about now. Did she eat dinner or just curl up in her room all night in tears? I take a deep breath and save the video so Theo can take care of it in the morning. In normal circumstances, I was supposed to wake him up right now, but this was because of me, and he must have had a long day, so I can wait a few more hours.
My mind trawls back to and what she might be doing. I knew it was a long shot to want to go to see her, but that was all I could think of now that my mind was in a jumble.
I know very well that my family would have fallen in love with her and approved of her the moment she walked into our home if they were alive. I could not protect the memory of my family in the open, but I am going to make sure that they get avenged for the injustice they suffered.
"Enoch must still be searching; none of them knew that I had returned to the country, and since then they had been trying to end me so they could have a claim to the papers in the safe, but none of them have been successful. They do not know that I have been under their nose the whole time, waiting to end them.
I close my eyes, and my family in a pool of their own blood climbed cruelly into my mind as if it wanted to implant itself there. I couldn't shake it off. Seeing my sister lie down there with her eyes open at me, but no emotions or life in them. I had closed off the memory of them for so long that maybe it was time to visit the third floor.
Moving out of the house and into this mansion was the best way to secure myself at that time, and planning from inside here, I could only break forth after seven years. I had set up the third floor the same way the house was and made sure to preserve their memory. I couldn't let myself forget.
Three years ago, I was finally able to stand in a position where Enoch and Clarendon could no longer ignore me. I know that they want what I have and may currently be planning to get it, but I was going to fight as much as I could to get back at them at this time. My mind stilled, and the images, still graphic in my mind, seemed a little normal now.
"Lucien?" I hear a whisper at the door, and I am sure for a moment that I am hearing things. Why was I hearing 's voice at this time of night? The voice came again, still a whisper but louder this time. I stalk to the door and open it to reveal her standing there, a robe wrapped around her body and her hair a mess. Her eyes were swollen and puffy as if she had been crying. Before I can say anything, she points the phone in my face; the video is paused on Theo’s fist at Cassian’s throat. Above the progress bar: 1.8 M views, and with her head down, she murmurs.
"I am sorry."
