"We have to leave now." Theo does not wait for me to sit back once I am back from the dance floor with Cassian. Cassian had been too adamant, almost causing a scene when I refused to dance with him. Just to make sure a rumour does not break out, and he does not know I had already seen through all of his lies. I had smiled like a doll and then agreed to go to the dance floor with him.
"What is happening?" I asked, trying to get an answer from him, but he is not his usual self, and I know better than to question him. "I guess we can go," I say, taking up my bag and allowing him to lead the way out.
Cassian comes after us. "Leaving already?" He had a smirk on his face, and I can tell now that Theo was not just leaving for the sake of it. Cassian had done something.
"I am sure you very well know the reason for it," Theo throws at him in a spiteful tone.
"What do you mean?" Cassian is trying to feign ignorance, and I can see the spite flash in his eyes. He looks satisfied with whatever he must have done. I can see Theo's hand clenching by his side; if we do not leave here now, this could escalate.
"Theo, let's go," I say, tapping his arm gently. "Mr. Wolfe," I turn to Cassian, trying to sound as formal as possible. "We have to leave now; there is something urgent we have to get to," I add, and Cassian turns to me and then nods.
He knows what the urgency is all about, and he seems to be enjoying it. "There is no issue at all; I hope to see you soon as well," he adds, and I smile at him with a nod.
"Okay then, good night," he says, taking a step back. I tap Theo gently, and he turns, and we both walk out until we are sitting in the back seat of the car.
"Are you going to explain what just happened now?" I asked when the atmosphere of the car seemed less tense than when we stepped in.
"I told Lucien that this was a terrible idea, going to a meeting that was set up by Cassian? I think that is just shooting ourselves in the foot, but he thought that..." He trailed off, clenching his fist and slamming the headrest of the chair in front of him.
"He thought that what?" I felt my heartbeat; this was Lucien's way of saying he trusted me. If this were to hurt him in any way, how could I forgive myself?
"That you deserved to be there," he replies without skipping a beat.
"I need you to explain what is going on right now," I say, and Theo takes a deep breath. He takes his phone from his jacket pocket and hands it to me. I take the phone and slowly take my eyes to the article in front of me.
"What is this?" I ask, staring at the picture of me and Cassian slow dancing at the event. I stare at the pictures, and then my eyes catch a glimpse of the words above. "IS MRS. VEXLEY A BETTER MATCH FOR MR. CASSIAN WOLFE OR MR. LUCIEN VEXLEY?"
We looked like a couple. Not one pretending—but one in love. His hand curved along my waist. My face was turned up toward his like he was whispering something meant just for me.
"Cassian did this." Theo sounded pained, and I could understand why. He was trying to make everyone think that something was going on between us. He was slandering me, but then it was obvious we could not do anything about it because there was no evidence that this was his doing.
"Why would he do this?" I ask and then suddenly shake my head as I realise that was the worst thing to ask. He didn't need a reason to do any of this; he just wanted to. "Let's go home," I declare, and the car starts almost on my command. The ride home and the atmosphere with Theo are scary. Not sad like the last time; it was almost as if he was blaming me for what had happened. We turn onto the street leading up to the mansion, and I turn to him.
"I am sorry; this was my fault. I should have disagreed when Cassian asked me out. I should not have asked Lucien if I could go; I feel like this is all my fault." I whisper, feeling tears line my eyes and my breath hitch in my throat. "I am sorry."
Theo does not tell me that it is not my fault; he glances at me and then back at the road. I allow the guilt to sit with me even though I know that in reality it is not my fault at all. The victim should not be blamed at all.
We finally get to the house, and Lucien is standing outside waiting as if he knew that we would be coming in any moment.
"Did you see that?" Theo asked as soon as he came face-to-face with Lucien.
"I did." Lucien is far calmer than Theo. "And it's not a big deal."
"It's not a big deal? You think it's not a big deal? How can you think that? This is a serious matter.," I stare at Lucien, and he glances at me for a few seconds before he places his eyes back on Theo.
"I am sure we can sort this out." Lucien is trying to de-escalate, but Theo is not having it.
"Of course not, we can't sort this out unless you want to go public," Theo screams in his face.
"Theo, let's speak when you are calm," Lucien says in a tone of finality. Theo stands there for a moment and then looks around the place; his eyes linger on me.
“I let her dance with him. I was standing right there.” He mutters, and then he storms off in anger. I take a step forward, and Lucien meets me, closing the gap between us.
"I am sorry; I should not have tried to go there. It's all my fault," I said, and he shakes his head.
"It is not," he whispers again, and by the time our eyes meet, I do not know why tears flow from my eyes almost instantly. "Please don't cry." He reached out to me and held me, rocking me back and forth as the tears continued to flow at once.
"I am sorry."
"It's not your fault."
