Jordan's devastatingly handsome face left Stella momentarily speechless. She stared at Jordan, dazed, for what felt like an eternity.
She had never planned this. It was pure chance that she ran into him. On a whim, she decided to ask for his help, since she had no one else to turn to now.
"Look, my company is right there, and marrying you is the smartest move for both of us. Before they ruin your reputation, I'll announce our marriage. I'll even say we met online—the story's already set. It's good for both of us."
Jordan added, "But don't worry, we can sign an agreement. You name the duration, and I'll comply with the terms."
Stella didn't say a word.
Jordan took another sip of coffee. "Take your time, but I imagine your family is running out of patience. You could hire an actor, but let's face it. You'd have to coach him on everything. No one knows your situation better than I do."
"I'm fine with it," Stella said quietly. "But wouldn't that be a lot to ask of you?"
"How could I be making a sacrifice when this is so good for my company? My marriage has always attracted plenty of attention. If I end up marrying someone of my own choosing, isn't that ideal for me?"
Stella hesitated and then asked, "But what about your family? Will they approve?"
Jordan said flatly, "I have no family." With that, Jordan set down his coffee cup.
Stella was momentarily speechless. When Jordan said he had no family, he meant there was literally no one else left, just him alone. There seemed to be no good reason to refuse this. Stella suggested cautiously, "Shouldn't we sign the agreement first?"
Jordan cut her off. "No time for that. We need to get married first. Speed is of the essence."
Stella nodded firmly, her decision made.
When Jordan emerged and announced they were heading to City Hall, his assistant was utterly dumbfounded. They'd barely bumped into each other on the street, and now they were getting married.
Jordan hadn't inherited a family empire. He built everything entirely from scratch. In just a few short years, he transformed Erwin Group into a powerhouse of a publicly traded company. Countless business moguls were vying to make him their son-in-law.
The assistant glanced at Stella. She was alarmingly thin, little more than skin and bones. When their eyes met, he was quite creeped out. He also found Stella's walking gesture weird.
"This is Ms. Hayes," Jordan said, his face impassive, perhaps sensing his assistant's scrutinizing gaze.
"Ms. Hayes?" the assistant echoed, surprised. The assistant froze for a moment, then realization dawned on him. "Mr. Jordan, do you mean the Ms. Hayes?"
Jordan nodded.
The assistant was stunned and stole another glance at Stella through the rearview mirror.
Though she looked a bit older than her age, she couldn't have been more than in her early twenties. And yet, to think, she was actually the very same Stella who had co-founded the company with Jordan.
Rumor had it that she had disappeared for three years because she'd been trafficked. The assistant couldn't help but feel sorry for her and decided to take good care of her for Jordan.
Before entering City Hall, Jordan told his assistant to get the press release ready. As soon as they came out, they'd post their marriage certificates online.
As they walked in, Stella hesitated and asked, "Are you absolutely sure you want to register our marriage with me? You can still back out now."
Jordan replied firmly, "A sham marriage would be too easy to expose. Since this is my decision, I won't have any regrets." He reached out and firmly took Stella's hand. He kept it clasped tightly in his, showing no intention of letting go.
