Stella no longer dared to trust anyone. Her hands, once soft and delicate, were now rough and calloused, and even after a month back home, they still hadn't regained their former softness. Yet Jordan never seemed to mind.
Stella, ever cautious, had made sure to retrieve her ID card and kept it with her. She told the staff she didn't have her household registration booklet, only her ID. They confirmed that was acceptable as long as she could provide all the necessary information.
With just a few photos and some paperwork, and since there weren't many people, Stella and Jordan were married before they knew it.
Stepping outside, Stella was still in disbelief.
Without asking, Jordan snatched the marriage certificate from Stella's hand and instructed his assistant, "Take a photo."
The assistant suggested, "Mr. Jordan, why don't you both hold the marriage certificate for the photo?"
"Fine," Jordan replied. He casually draped his arm over Stella's shoulder while holding up their marriage certificate in his other hand for the photo.
The assistant glanced over and suggested, "Mr. Jordan, your hand doesn't really need to be on top of Ms. Stella's. It might look better if you both held the certificate together for the photo."
Stella thought Jordan was acting a bit odd, but since he seemed so natural about it, she didn't dwell on it.
As soon as the photo was taken, Jordan once again snatched the marriage certificate from Stella's hands.
"I'll hold onto the marriage certificate. Your family could easily snatch it, along with your ID and other important documents. We'll go to your place soon and move your things out."
Stella froze. "Where to?"
Jordan replied, a teasing note in his voice, "We're married now. What do you think?"
For a moment, Stella was so stunned that she couldn't say a word.
"Relax, I won't lay a finger on you," Jordan murmured close to her ear and guided her into the car.
The press release had already gone out. Since Kevin was the only one who had Stella's phone number, she was spared from witnessing the utter frenzy the Hayes family must have been in at that moment.
Strangely enough, she was actually dying to go back and see their reactions now.
The assistant's phone rang up front. He answered, listened, then first glanced at Stella.
Jordan said, "Speak freely. From now on, nothing needs to be hidden from her."
"Yes, sir. Someone from the company just called. The Hayes family tried to release a statement claiming Ms. Hayes's reputation was compromised by Troy. We caught it early and blocked it. Does this approach meet your approval?"
"Good. From now on, remove any negative news about Ms. Hayes immediately," Jordan commanded.
"Yes, sir," the assistant replied. And then he quickly relayed the message and hung up.
He stole another glance at the two in the rearview mirror. They seemed awkwardly stiff, hardly like a married couple. For some reason, he couldn't shake the feeling that Jordan wasn't doing this for himself, nor even for the company's benefit.
Stella's phone rang. It was Kevin calling. She knew that the moment she got married, Kevin would be the first to call. "You've seen it all, Kevin?"
"You know Jordan? Since when? Stella, do you even know what kind of person he is?" Kevin fired off a barrage of questions.
Without giving Stella any chance to respond, he continued, "He built his empire from scratch, but there's a mysterious figure backing him. He's ruthless and decisive. Any company that ever crossed him ended up destroyed.
"He's definitely no saint, Stella. Even if you need help, he's the last person you should turn to. He'll devour you whole and not even leave a bone behind."
Stella pressed her hand over the receiver, turned to Jordan, and asked, "So, am I your mysterious backer everyone's talking about?"
